A senior cat that eats well for 4 days and then picks at food for 2 is not being fussy. Between 11 and 15 years appetite turns into a wave with a 3 to 7 day period, pushed by dental pain, kidney function, nausea, and a nose that reports less every year. The way to read that wave is a written 3 day cycle, a 50 percent rule for single days, and a 48 hour line that ends the guessing. Cats that stop completely are covered on the refusal timeline page; this page is for the cat that still eats, just unevenly.

Why a 14 year old eats in waves

Three systems move appetite and all 3 drift with age. Smell: by 12 the olfactory lining is thinner, so a meal needs 2 or 3 times the aroma to register. Teeth: periodontal disease and tooth resorption are common by 11, and a sore mouth may tolerate soft food on day 1 and refuse hard kibble on day 4. Gut: chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects a large share of cats past 15, and the nausea that comes with it is episodic, not constant. Add a body temperature of 38 to 39.2 C that dips about 0.5 C at night, and you get the pattern owners describe: a big breakfast, a skipped dinner, 3 good days, 1 bad one.

The 3 day cycle, written down

Score each meal instead of weighing it. 4 = finished, 3 = three quarters, 2 = half, 1 = a few bites, 0 = untouched. Four meals a day at 07:00, 12:00, 17:00 and 22:00 gives 12 scores per 3 day cycle, and 12 numbers show a trend that memory blurs. Write the score, the food, the time, and 1 line on behaviour: vomiting, stool, hiding, yowling at 03:00. Keep the sheet up for 4 cycles, 12 days, before drawing a conclusion. A cat scoring 3s and 2s at 8 of 12 meals is stable. A cat with 2 zeros and 4 ones in one cycle is not, even when the weekly total looks fine.

The single day under 50 percent rule

Turn scores into intake. A 4.5 kg cat needs roughly 200 to 250 kcal a day, or 4 to 5 pouches of a typical 85 g senior pate. If 1 day delivers under 50 percent of that, do not change the diet. Change 3 things: warm the food to 37 C, cut the portion in half, put a second bowl 2 m away. One day under 50 percent in an otherwise stable cat is a data point. Two such days inside 1 cycle is the trigger to call the clinic, and 3 in a row is an appointment within 24 hours. Never average a bad day against a good one to make the week look acceptable.

The 48 hour red line

Complete refusal is a different problem from a 40 percent day, and it runs on a hard clock: 24 hours of zero intake earns a phone call, 48 hours earns an examination the same day. A cat with CKD, diabetes, or a past episode of hepatic lipidosis is seen at 12 hours, because 2 to 3 days of inadequate calories lets the liver mobilise fat faster than it can process it, and recovery from fatty liver runs 7 to 14 days in hospital. A cat that also vomits 3 or more times in 24 hours, or stops passing urine clumps, skips the phone call and goes in.

The 5 level enticement ladder

Climb 1 level at a time and give each level 2 attempts before moving up. Owners who jump to level 5 on day 1 spend the tool they will need on day 9.

LevelWhat changesMinutes per attemptCost per day (USD)
1Warm to 37 C, add 1 tbsp water, mash flat100
21 tsp tuna water or sardine water on top101
3Texture swap: pate, shreds, mousse, second protein151 to 2
4Hand-feed in a closed quiet room, 4 to 6 offers a day100
5Vet visit: anti-nausea drug, appetite stimulant, bloodwork3060 to 150

Levels 1 to 3 settle most mild dips inside 48 hours and cost almost nothing. Level 4 is about pressure: a watched cat often eats 2 bites and leaves, so put the bowl down and walk out for 10 minutes. Level 5 is prescription territory, and appetite stimulants do not replace a diagnosis: mirtazapine and capromorelin both raise intake, and neither fixes a tooth or a kidney.

Water, weight and the numbers that decide

Weigh weekly on the same scale to the nearest 10 g and log it beside the scores. A 4.5 kg cat losing 225 g has lost 5 percent, the point where most vets start hunting for a cause; 450 g, or 10 percent, over 6 months is where imaging gets discussed. Water matters more than owners expect: 40 to 60 ml per kg per day, so 180 to 270 ml for that cat, and a cat eating half its food takes in roughly half its water from food. Under 1 urine clump a day, or 2 clumps where there used to be 4, belongs in the same log.

When to change food and when not to

Do not rotate food during a dip. A new protein on day 2 means you learn nothing and may create a food aversion that outlasts the illness. Change 1 variable at a time and hold it for 3 days. When a food is refused at 3 consecutive meals, texture is the likelier culprit than flavour: most senior cats that refuse pate will take the same protein as shreds in gravy. Rotate on stable weeks only, and keep 2 proteins and 2 textures in the cupboard so a restock never lands in the middle of a bad cycle. Wet food for a senior runs about 60 to 120 USD a month; see the cost breakdown before switching brands mid-cycle.

What the sheet shows the vet

Bring 3 things: the 12 day score sheet, the weight line, and 10 seconds of video of the cat at the bowl. Video catches jaw chattering, food dropped on the floor, head tilt to 1 side while chewing, and lip smacking before vomit, which point at teeth or nausea faster than any description. Owners who arrive with 12 days of scores usually leave with a plan; owners who arrive with the sentence he is not eating usually leave with bloodwork and a wait.

Five steps for tonight

  • Print a 4 by 3 grid, 12 boxes for 3 days, and score every meal for 12 days.
  • Weigh the cat tonight, then every 7 days, to the nearest 10 g.
  • Warm 1 portion to 37 C and split it into 2 halves 2 m apart.
  • Set a phone reminder for 48 hours after the first zero, so the red line is not a judgement call at midnight.
  • Book a dental check if the cat chews on 1 side or drops food; 1 visit is cheaper than 3 weeks of food experiments.

Frequently asked

How many days of meal scores do I need before the numbers mean something?

Four cycles, which is 12 days and 48 scored meals at 4 meals a day. A single 3 day cycle can be thrown off by a vaccine, a visitor or a hot night, so most vets want to see at least 2 consecutive cycles with the same pattern before changing a diet or ordering bloodwork. Bring the sheet, not a summary of it.

My cat eats half its food on some days but is bright and playful. Is that a problem?

One day under 50 percent in a cat that is otherwise normal is a data point rather than an emergency. Two such days inside one 3 day cycle, or any weight loss of 5 percent over 6 months, moves it into a same week appointment. A cat that is bright but has lost 225 g at 4.5 kg is still losing weight.

Does a senior cat need a different food when appetite drops?

Usually not on the first day. Warm the existing food to 37 C, halve the portion and offer it in a quiet room before buying anything. Changing protein during a dip destroys the information you are collecting and can create an aversion. Switch texture, not brand, and only after 3 consecutive refused meals.
