The first warm week is when windows stay open for 6 to 8 hours a day, and it is also when the fracture cases arrive. A screen fitted to keep out mosquitoes is not a barrier for a 4.5 kg cat: it holds roughly 5 kg of static load and pops out of its channel when a cat launches at it from a windowsill. Fix the barrier before the first open window, not after the first fall.
Why spring is the high-rise season
Falls from height make up roughly 3 to 5 percent of urban small-animal emergency caseloads, and the curve spikes in the 3 to 5 weeks after the first warm spell. Overall survival is high, near 9 in 10 cats reaching a clinic alive, which is exactly why owners underestimate the risk. Mortality climbs with height: above the 4th floor it runs about 10 to 20 percent. Survivors are not uninjured — hard palate fractures, pneumothorax, fractured limbs and pelvic fractures are the common set, and a cat that lands on its feet from 6 floors still hits at close to terminal velocity, around 100 km/h, reached after roughly 5 to 6 floors of free fall.
Screens are rated for insects, not cats
A standard nylon insect screen in a 4-clip frame carries about 5 kg before the spline pulls free, and a cat pushing with 4 paws on a 60 by 80 cm panel loads it far past that. Fitting details for reinforced panels and frame clips are in the screen fitting guide. The frame, not the mesh, is usually what fails: the panel bows out of the channel and the cat goes through the gap with the screen. Sit at the window and push with a flat hand at 3 points — middle, and 10 cm in from each corner — for 10 seconds each. If the mesh touches the outside glass line, an 8 kg cat will not be stopped by it.
Four barrier options and what each one holds
| Barrier | Load before failure | Cost per opening | Life | How it fails |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard nylon insect screen, 4 clips | About 5 kg | USD 15 to 40 | 2 to 3 years | Pops out of the channel at the corners |
| Pet screen, vinyl-coated polyester, 3x yarn | 20 kg | USD 40 to 90 | 5 to 7 years | Cut or clawed through after 3 to 4 years of UV |
| Aluminium grille, 12 mm bars, gaps 5 cm | 40 kg | USD 25 to 60 per m2 | 10 years and up | Cat squeezes through any gap over 6 cm |
| Balcony net, nylon 3 cm mesh | 15 kg on a tensioned frame | USD 8 to 15 per m2 | 3 to 5 years | Sags at the bottom edge, leaving a 10 cm gap |
| Balcony net, 2 mm stainless wire | 50 kg | USD 20 to 35 per m2 | 8 to 10 years | Rust at the anchor points if the wall is damp |
The two balcony net types, and the height that matters
The cheap option is a nylon or polyethylene net with 3 cm mesh, tied to a tensioned steel wire at the top and bottom; it holds about 15 kg when the frame is tight and it is the right choice for a rental where drilling is not allowed. The durable option is 2 mm stainless wire at 5 cm spacing on an aluminium frame, which holds 50 kg and survives 8 to 10 years of sun. Either way, the net has to run 1.5 m high at minimum and 2 m is better, because a cat can clear 1.5 m from a standing start on a railing top. The failure is almost never the mesh: it is a 10 cm gap at the bottom where the net meets the floor, or a corner where the cable has gone slack. Pull the bottom edge up with one hand every month; if it lifts more than 5 cm, re-tension it.
Windows: open 5 cm, or not at all
A cat's head is about 8 cm wide at the cheeks and a determined cat passes a 10 cm gap. Fit a window limiter and set the stop at 5 cm; a tilt-and-turn window on the tilt setting leaves a 15 to 20 cm wedge at the top that a cat will use. On a balcony door, the same rule applies to the 20 cm gap people leave for air. If a window has to stay open for ventilation, open the one without a sill the cat can reach, or open it in a room with the door shut.
Furniture is the launch pad
Move anything the cat can stand on to at least 1 m back from the opening: the windowsill itself, a 60 cm bookshelf, a cat tree with a 1.2 m platform. A cat does not jump at a screen from the floor; it sits on the sill, sees a bird 3 m away, and pushes off with both hind legs. A 1.2 m cat tree placed 30 cm from the glass converts a safe room into a launch ramp. Balcony plants are the second hazard on the same shelf: lilies, oleander and sago palm all appear on the toxicity list, and a cat will eat a leaf through the net.
If a cat does fall: the first hour and the next 72
Do not let the cat run. Shock hides pain for 30 to 60 minutes, and a cat that walks on a fractured pelvis makes it worse. Slide a towel under it, lift it flat, keep it horizontal in a carrier, and call the clinic on the way. Do not offer food or water, and do not wait to see whether it seems fine: pneumothorax and hard palate fractures often declare themselves between 12 and 36 hours after the landing, so any fall from above the 2nd floor needs an exam the same day and observation for 72 hours. Bruising on the chest, breathing over 40 breaths per minute at rest, or blood from the nose and mouth means go now, not in the morning.
Checklist for the first warm weekend
- Push-test every screen at 3 points; replace any panel that flexes to the outside glass line.
- Fit window limiters at 5 cm on every opening the cat can reach, including the balcony door.
- Move cat trees and shelves 1 m back from the glass.
- Pull the balcony net bottom edge monthly; re-tension if it lifts more than 5 cm.
- Keep the carrier assembled and the clinic number on the fridge, because the decision window is 1 hour, not 1 day.
None of this replaces a vet visit after a fall. A cat that lands well and walks away can still be bleeding into the chest 12 hours later, and the exam plus a chest X-ray is what rules that out. Spring-proofing the room is cheaper than the 3 to 5 percent odds and far cheaper than a 3-day hospital stay.

Frequently asked
Does a normal window screen stop a cat from falling?
Rarely. A standard nylon insect screen in a 4-clip frame holds about 5 kg of static load, and the frame usually pops out of its channel before the mesh tears. Push-test at 3 points; if the panel reaches the outer glass line, replace it with pet mesh, a grille, or keep the window at a 5 cm stop.
How high does a balcony net need to be?
At least 1.5 m, and 2 m is safer, because a cat can clear 1.5 m from a standing start on a railing. Check the bottom edge monthly: a 10 cm gap where the net meets the floor is the usual failure, not a torn mesh.
The cat fell but seems fine. Should I still go to the vet?
Yes, the same day, for any fall above the 2nd floor. Shock hides pain for 30 to 60 minutes and pneumothorax or a hard palate fracture often shows up 12 to 36 hours later. Keep the cat flat, do not offer food, and observe for 72 hours after the exam.
