A lick of drain gel is a 10-minute problem: rinse the mouth, do not make the cat vomit, and be in the car by minute 10. Sodium hydroxide at 20% to 50% sits at pH 13.5 to 14, dissolves fat and protein on contact, and keeps working for 10 to 20 minutes after the tongue leaves the bottle. What you must not do on the way is induce vomiting, pour vinegar into the mouth, or wait to see whether signs appear.

What is actually in the bottle

Three forms matter. Gel drain cleaner is 20% to 50% sodium or potassium hydroxide and clings to a tongue, so a 1 mL lick is a real dose on a 4 kg cat. Crystalline drain opener is often 100% lye and dissolves in saliva, so the burn starts lower. Foaming pipe powder adds aluminium chips that heat the mixture to 60 to 90 °C, a thermal burn on top of a chemical one. Oven cleaner and dishwasher powder belong to the same family at pH 12 to 14.

The 10-minute line

Minute 0 to 2: wipe the gel off tongue, lips and paws with a dry cloth, then flush the mouth with lukewarm water at 15 to 25 °C from a syringe into the side of the mouth, letting it run out rather than forcing a swallow. Minute 2 to 5: flush coated skin or paw for 10 to 15 minutes, since lye on skin keeps burning and paw pads are thin. Minute 5 to 10: phone the clinic with the product and the amount, and put the cat in the car. Minute 10 is the deadline for leaving, not for finishing the flush.

Why vomiting is off the table

Three reasons, all of them mechanical. The burned esophagus is exposed to the same caustic a second time, and tissue that survived the first pass does not survive the return trip. Vomiting raises pressure inside a wall that may already be perforated, and a perforation at hour 6 is a surgery, not a medicine. And the vomited material can be inhaled into airways that are 5 to 8 mm across, which turns a mouth burn into pneumonia on top. That is why no vet asks an owner to use salt water, hydrogen peroxide, or a finger at the back of the throat for this poison.

What not to give, and what the vet may

  • No vinegar, lemon juice or citric acid: neutralising lye releases heat in tissue that is already burned.
  • No activated charcoal: it binds no alkali, it blackens the mucosa the endoscope needs to see, and it is only given by a vet, by prescription.
  • No food or drink after the first rinse, because an empty stomach is what makes endoscopy possible within the first 12 to 24 hours.
  • No scrubbing of a coated paw and no bath for a cat that is drooling, since handling raises the risk of aspiration.

At the clinic, treatment is supportive: fluids, pain relief, and a mucosal protectant such as sucralfate by prescription, with an antiemetic if the cat is vomiting. None of it is an antidote, because lye has none; the damage already done is the disease, and the job is to limit how deep it goes.

The 3-week row is the one that gets forgotten. A cat that eats on day 3 and starts bringing food back up on day 12 has a narrowing, not a fussy appetite, and the window for balloon dilation is easier at week 3 than at week 8. Book the 14-day check at the same time you leave the clinic on day 1.

Powder, paw and eye routes

Powder is the exception to the water rule: brush it off the coat with a dry cloth first, because water on dry lye generates heat and drives it deeper, then flush 15 minutes. A paw that walked through gel gets the same 15 minutes and a bandage, since a cat licks a bandaged pad less. Eyes need 15 to 20 minutes of flushing and a same-hour clinic visit; same pattern, tighter clock. A coin or screw swallowed during the raid is a second problem, and the zinc and coin guide covers the 6-hour window for metal.

Keeping the bottle away from a cat

Drain cleaner deserves a locked box rather than a high shelf: the bottle tips over easily and the gel coats a whole paw. Close the bathroom door while it works, keep the cat out for the 30 minutes the label asks for, and rinse the sink twice before the cat gets back in. A cat recovering from a urinary catheter is in and out of that bathroom all day, which is when owners reach for the strong stuff; the catheter aftercare routine lists the cleaners that are safe around a healing cat, and the toxin list covers the rest by name.

The 5 steps, in order

  • Wipe the gel off with a dry cloth, then rinse the mouth from the side for 2 minutes.
  • Flush coated skin or paws 10 to 15 minutes with 15 to 25 °C water, no scrubbing.
  • Do not induce vomiting, and do not give vinegar, lemon, charcoal or food.
  • Phone the clinic by minute 5 and be in the car by minute 10, with the bottle.
  • Book the 14-day recheck for stricture before you leave the clinic.

Frequently asked

Should I make my cat vomit after it licks drain cleaner?

Never. The burned esophagus gets a second pass of the same caustic, vomiting raises pressure in a wall that may already be perforated, and the material can be inhaled into an airway 5 to 8 mm across. Salt water, hydrogen peroxide and a finger in the throat all do harm here, so rinse the mouth and drive instead.

How long do I have before a lye burn gets worse?

The active burn runs 10 to 20 minutes after contact, so rinse in the first 2 minutes, flush coated skin for 10 to 15 minutes, and be in the car by minute 10. Depth is judged by endoscopy within 12 to 24 hours, and a stricture can still appear 7 to 21 days later.

Will vinegar or lemon juice neutralise drain cleaner?

No, and it makes the injury worse, because neutralising lye inside living tissue releases heat on a surface that is already burned. Activated charcoal does not bind alkali and hides the mucosa from the endoscope, so the only fluids that help are lukewarm water at 15 to 25 °C, plus whatever the vet gives by prescription.
