Six line items carry almost every dental bill: exam and charting, pre-anesthetic bloodwork, full-mouth x-rays, anesthesia, scaling and polishing, and extractions. A cat that loses 2 teeth lands near 950 USD in the US, 800 GBP in the UK, and 2,500 CNY in China. Drop the extractions and the same visit falls to 725 USD, 610 GBP, and 2,060 CNY.
Expect a 1.5 to 3 times spread between a suburban general practice and a dental-only clinic in the same city. Compare the 6 lines one by one; the total hides the difference.
Why the bill has 6 lines, not 1
Periodontal disease is scored 1 to 4. Grade 1 is tartar at the gumline, grade 2 reaches the crown, grade 3 means 25 to 50 percent attachment loss, grade 4 means more than 50 percent plus mobile teeth. Each grade maps to a different amount of work: a grade 1 cat needs 25 to 40 minutes of chair time, a grade 4 cat with 4 extractions needs 90 to 120.
Most cats over 3 have at least grade 1 tartar along the upper molars, and a cat that has never had a cleaning commonly has 1 to 3 teeth that cannot be saved. That is why a clinic that quotes 1 flat number is quoting a polish, not a treatment.
Line 1: exam and charting, 10 to 15 minutes
The exam is where the grade is written down, tooth by tooth, across 30 permanent teeth. It costs 70 USD, 55 GBP, or 80 CNY and takes 10 to 15 minutes. Ask for the chart in writing before any sedation: a grade 3 on the lower carnassial is the difference between a 30-minute clean and a 2-tooth surgical extraction.
A clinic that will not chart is a clinic that will not quote honestly. Walk out and rebook; the exam fee is the cheapest 70 USD you will spend this year.
Line 2: pre-anesthetic bloodwork, 5 to 7 values
Minimum panel: PCV or Hct, total protein, BUN, creatinine, ALT, glucose, and potassium. Cost is 95 USD, 80 GBP, or 380 CNY; results come back in 20 to 60 minutes in house, 1 to 2 days if sent out. The panel exists to catch 3 numbers that change the anesthetic plan: creatinine above 2.0 mg/dL, potassium outside 3.5 to 5.5 mmol/L, and Hct under 20 percent.
Cats over 8 usually add a total T4 for 85 USD. A T4 above 4.0 µg/dL raises heart rate and blood pressure under anesthesia, so the protocol changes before the cat is on the table.
Line 3: full-mouth x-rays, 10 to 14 films
Full-mouth films cost 150 USD, 130 GBP, or 300 CNY and take 10 to 15 minutes under the same anesthetic. They find what a probe cannot: root resorption, retained roots, and bone loss under a tooth that looks clean from the crown. Skipping them is how a cat ends up with a 5 mm piece of root left in the jaw and a second surgery 6 months later.
If the clinic has no dental x-ray unit, ask where the cat is referred. A quote that omits films is 150 USD cheaper and 2 visits longer.
Line 4: anesthesia and monitoring, 45 to 90 minutes
The largest single line: 190 USD, 160 GBP, or 600 CNY. It covers premedication, an IV catheter, induction, intubation, oxygen, isoflurane or sevoflurane, a heat source, fluids, and 1 dedicated nurse logging heart rate, blood pressure, SpO2 above 95 percent, ETCO2 between 35 and 45 mmHg, and temperature above 36.5 °C every 5 minutes.
Fasting is 4 to 6 hours; water stays available until 2 hours before. A grade 3 or 4 heart murmur adds an echocardiogram at 150 to 250 USD and 30 extra minutes, and a cat with a systolic pressure under 90 mmHg does not go under until it is stabilized.
Lines 5 and 6: scaling, polishing, extraction
Scaling with an ultrasonic tip and hand curettes plus polishing runs 220 USD, 185 GBP, or 700 CNY and takes 25 to 40 minutes. Polishing is not cosmetic: a rough enamel surface regains tartar in 4 to 8 weeks, which is why 6-month cleanings exist. A fluoride varnish adds 15 to 25 USD and buys less than a smooth polish.
Extraction is 85 to 120 USD per tooth for a simple pull, 150 to 250 for a surgical extraction with a flap and 3 to 5 sutures. The table bundles 2 teeth, discharge pain medication, and the 14-day recheck into 1 line at 225 USD, 190 GBP, or 440 CNY. Healing takes 10 to 14 days, soft food for 7 to 14, no hard kibble for 3 weeks.
The 6-line total, 3 regions
| Line item | US (USD) | UK (GBP) | China (CNY) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Exam and full charting | 70 | 55 | 80 |
| 2. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork | 95 | 80 | 380 |
| 3. Full-mouth x-rays, 12 films | 150 | 130 | 300 |
| 4. Anesthesia and monitoring | 190 | 160 | 600 |
| 5. Scaling and polishing | 220 | 185 | 700 |
| 6. 2 extractions, meds, 14-day recheck | 225 | 190 | 440 |
| Total, grades 3 to 4 | 950 | 800 | 2500 |
Rows 1 through 5 alone give 725 USD, 610 GBP, and 2,060 CNY, which is the realistic floor for a grade 1 or 2 cat with no extractions. Anything quoted below 725 USD for a full-mouth clean under general anesthesia is missing at least 1 of the 6 lines.
What moves the total by 1.5 to 3 times
Four levers do most of the work. Region: a 20 km move inside one metro can halve the anesthesia line. Equipment: a clinic that owns a dental x-ray unit prices films at 130 to 300, one that refers out adds a second visit. Staffing: a boarded anesthetist on site costs 60 to 120 more than a technician alone. Extractions: 1 tooth is 85 to 120, 5 teeth can push the visit past 1,400 USD.
Frequency sets the yearly number. Grade 2 disease means a cleaning every 6 to 12 months; grade 1 with daily brushing holds at 12 to 18 months. Two cleanings a year at 725 USD is 1,450 USD, more than 1 dental visit with 4 extractions.
When to book, and when to call today
Book for bad breath, 1 to 2 mm of visible tartar, or gum bleeding when you brush. Call within 24 hours for drooling with a head tilt, a swelling under the eye, 24 hours without food, or a tooth that moves when you touch it. Those 4 signs point to a root abscess or a jaw infection, and the price is no longer a cleaning.
The dental visit is the largest predictable cost in a cat's year, so price the whole year at the cost tool, then read the short cleaning cost page and the x-ray pricing page before you agree to skip the films.
Before you book: 5 questions
- Is every tooth graded 1 to 4 on a chart I can keep?
- Are full-mouth films included, and how many views per side?
- Who watches anesthesia, and how often are the 5 vitals logged?
- What does a surgical extraction add per tooth, and is a flap included?
- Is the 14-day recheck inside the total, or billed again at 40 to 60 USD?
Get those 5 answers in writing, and the 950 USD estimate stops being a surprise 3 weeks later.

Frequently asked
Is the cheapest dental quote safe to take?
Usually not. A quote below 725 USD for a full-mouth cleaning under general anesthesia is missing at least 1 of the 6 lines, most often the x-rays or the monitoring. Ask for the 6 items by name, in writing, before you compare totals.
Do I really need full-mouth x-rays every time?
Yes, at every cleaning under anesthesia. Films take 10 to 15 minutes and cost 130 to 300 depending on region, and they show root resorption and bone loss that a probe cannot feel. Without them, 1 to 3 teeth can be left with diseased roots and the cat needs a second surgery 6 to 12 months later.
How often should a cat be scaled?
Grade 2 disease means every 6 to 12 months, grade 1 with daily brushing stretches to 12 to 18 months. Two cleanings a year at 725 USD costs more than 1 visit with 4 extractions, so the schedule should follow the chart, not a fixed calendar.
