A thread under the tongue is the most expensive 20 cm in a cat's life. The tongue cannot untangle itself, the gut plicates like an accordion around the taut line, and the only fix is surgery, usually 2,000-6,000 RMB and a 3-5 day stay. Nothing in that sequence starts with a dramatic accident; it starts with a 30 cm ribbon left on a table.

Cords and string fail in three distinct ways, and each one needs a different fix at a different height. Treating them as one problem leaves the blind cord, the charger and the hair tie where they were.

Risk 1: the mouth — linear foreign body

Thread, floss, tinsel, ribbon and sewing cotton share one property: once a loop settles under the tongue, the cat cannot get it off, and every swallow pulls more line into the gut. The intestine then bunches around the taut string and cuts through its own wall in 3-5 days. Vomiting starts at 24-48 hours, often while the cat still eats.

The check takes 10 seconds: lift the lip, lift the tongue, look at the two folds under it. A thread there is a same-hour vet visit. If a length is hanging from the mouth or the anus, cut it to 5 cm and do not pull — pulling can saw through the tongue base or tear the bowel.

Risk 2: the neck — hanging loops

A loop that catches a neck at 40-60 cm above the floor kills by strangulation, not by cutting: a 4 kg cat hanging from a blind cord loses consciousness in under 2 minutes. Blind and curtain cords are the standard case, and a charger cable draped over a chair back makes the same loop at 70 cm.

Breakaway collars solve the collar version of this and nothing else. Blinds need the loop cut, or a cordless system, and the free end cleated at 1.5 m so it never hangs below 1.6 m from the floor.

Risk 3: the limb and tail — elastic bands

A hair tie or rubber band around a paw or the tail base is invisible in fur. Swelling starts within 30-60 minutes, the tissue past the band loses blood supply in 6-12 hours, and the first visible sign is usually a paw at twice its normal width, or a cat chewing at a tail it cannot feel properly. A band that has been on for 24 hours is a surgical wound, not a grooming problem.

Elastics also get eaten. A cat that swallows 2-3 hair ties presents 2-4 days later with vomiting and a firm, painful abdomen, and the 3 ties may sit in 3 different loops of bowel.

Fix point 1: the media cabinet, 0-60 cm

Bundle every cable behind the TV into 10 mm split trunking, clip it at 30 cm intervals, and anchor the bundle to the wall 15 cm below the shelf so nothing hangs in a loop. Seal any gap between cabinet and wall wider than 5 cm with a board: a cat that goes behind a 45 cm deep cabinet at floor level comes out with a live cable in its mouth.

Check the low runs first. Cords under a sofa are chewed more often than cords at 1 m, because a cat lying under the sofa meets them at mouth height and can work on one for 20 minutes undisturbed.

Fix point 2: the desk and the charger, 60-100 cm

Replace any charging cable longer than 1 m with a 0.3-0.5 m one, coil the slack with a velcro tie and put it in a lidded box on the desk. Unplug at night. A live 5 V cable is not a shock risk, but the habit of chewing is, and a cat that has learned to chew a phone cable will chew a 220 V lamp cord with the same mouth.

Lamp and monitor cords get the same trunking, plus a 15 cm cable clip at the top so the cord enters the socket vertically instead of looping out. Sockets at floor level behind furniture take a plug cover: 20-40 RMB for a pack of 6.

Fix point 3: blinds and curtains, 100-200 cm

Cut every loop, fit a cleat at 1.5 m, and shorten the free cord so its lowest point is 1.6 m above the floor — a cat standing on a 40 cm windowsill then cannot reach it. Cordless blinds remove the problem rather than managing it, and cost 100-300 RMB more per window.

Curtain tie-backs count too. A 60 cm fabric tie hanging at 90 cm is a loop at the exact height a cat jumps through.

Fix point 4: the toy drawer, everything above 200 cm

Wand toys go in a closed drawer, not on a shelf, with the string wound to under 30 cm. Ribbon and tinsel stay in a lidded box; a 30 cm ribbon is enough for a linear foreign body. Sewing kits live in a clip-lock box at 200 cm or higher, and the bin for thread ends gets a lid.

Leave one acceptable string in the house: a 15 cm fleece strip on a wand, used only while you hold it, put away after 10 minutes of play. Cats need the hunt, not unsupervised line.

Swallowed string: the 24-hour window

Vomiting within 24-48 hours, a cat that eats then vomits 30 minutes later, a firm abdomen, or a thread visible at the anus all mean the same thing: imaging today, not in 3 days. An ultrasound or 2 radiographs at 200-400 RMB is cheap against a 2,000-6,000 RMB enterectomy, and the cost guide lists both.

Do not give a laxative, do not feed a big meal to "push it through", and do not cut a thread that disappears into the mouth. A linear foreign body that has been pulled tight is a perforated bowel waiting for day 3.

A 20-minute weekly sweep

  1. Look under the sofa and behind the TV for a cable at mouth height; re-clip at 30 cm.
  2. Run a hand along the blind cord: any loop gets cut today, cleat at 1.5 m.
  3. Check the floor for hair ties, ribbon and floss; 3 items is a normal week's find.
  4. Lift the cat's lip and tongue once a week; 10 seconds, same time as the weigh-in.
  5. Put the wand toy away when play ends, string wound under 30 cm.

Total cost for the whole flat is 85-440 RMB and one afternoon. The window perch matters here too: a cat with a high, safe place to watch the street spends less time on the windowsill playing with the cord.

Frequently asked

My cat swallowed a 20 cm piece of ribbon. Will it pass?

Possibly, but ribbon rarely passes cleanly because it is flat and catches at the tongue base or the pylorus. Watch for vomiting in the first 48 hours, check the mouth and under the tail every 8 hours, and get imaging the same day if the cat vomits twice or stops eating. Never pull a visible end.

Are cord protectors enough for a cat that chews cables?

They help only if the whole run is covered. A 10 mm split trunking clipped at 30 cm intervals covers about 90% of a visible run, but a cat will find the 15 cm gap at the plug end, so add a socket cover and keep the last 15 cm tight against the wall. Bitter sprays stop working after 2-3 weeks.

Is a bell collar safer than a breakaway collar for a blind cord?

No. A bell does nothing for strangulation, and only a breakaway or quick-release buckle that opens under about 1-2 kg of pull gives a cat a way out. Even then, cut the cord loop and cleat it at 1.5 m, because a collar that catches on a hook still hangs the cat.
