A string is the only cat toy that can kill without breaking the skin. A swallowed thread anchors at the base of the tongue or the pylorus, then saws through the intestine as peristalsis pushes it along, a pattern called a linear foreign body. The rules are short: 20 cm maximum, 5 minutes a session, then the string goes in a tin, and a swallowed thread means the clinic within 2 hours.

Both limits exist because the damage happens while the cat plays alone.

Why a thread is worse than a lump

A cat's tongue is covered in backward-facing papillae, so a thread on the tongue cannot be spat out; every lick pulls it deeper. A 2 cm pom-pom either passes or lodges in 1 place. A thread does neither: it fixes at 1 end and the gut piles up around it, pleating 20 to 40 cm of bowel into an accordion within 12 to 24 hours.

That pleating is why it becomes surgical. The wall is cut at every fold, bacteria leak, and peritonitis follows, so 1 thread swallowed on a Friday can mean surgery on Saturday and a 3 to 5 day stay.

The 20 cm limit, and why 60 cm is the danger zone

Twenty centimetres is the longest strand a cat can drag without looping a leg or catching on furniture, and short enough that a swallowed piece is likely to pass rather than anchor. Most ribbon wands and tinsel teasers ship with 40 to 60 cm of line, exactly the range that produces linear foreign bodies.

Cut every string toy to 20 cm or less, square rather than angled, because an angled tip catches in the pharynx. If the toy needs more reach, add a 30 cm rod rather than more line. Retire frayed string at once: a strand unravelling into 5 or 6 filaments is 5 or 6 linear foreign bodies waiting to happen.

Five minutes, then it goes away

String play is a 5-minute activity, because interest peaks in the first 90 seconds and risk accumulates with every minute the string lies loose. Play 5 minutes, then put the string in a closed tin on a shelf 1.5 m up.

End with the string out of the cat's mouth. Lay it on the floor and slide a treat or felt mouse along it, so the last action is a catch on something solid; a cat that ends with a mouthful of ribbon hunts ribbon all evening.

Two sessions of 5 minutes beat 1 of 15, and you stop the moment the cat chews rather than chases, because chewing is the step before swallowing.

The 2-hour rule after swallowing

If a thread disappears, the clock starts then. Call the clinic and say linear foreign body; do not wait for vomiting, because a cat can look normal for 12 to 24 hours while the pleating develops. The 2-hour window is about starting assessment and imaging, not about surgery inside 2 hours.

Do not pull a string hanging from the mouth or anus. A visible end means the other end is anchored, and pulling can cut through the bowel wall in 1 motion. Cut the visible length to 3 cm and go. Never induce vomiting, and bring the spool or the other half of the toy.

Strings you did not buy as toys

Most linear foreign bodies come from household items, not the pet shop: dental floss, hair ties, sewing thread, balloon ribbon, tinsel, the elastic in a face mask. A hair tie is 6 to 8 cm and elastic, so it stretches and anchors, and 2 swallowed in a week is a common history.

Floss is worse than thread because it is waxed: 30 cm can pleat the whole small intestine. Keep it in a closed bin, not on the basin. Sewing thread is the classic case because it comes with a needle, and a 4 cm needle on 50 cm of thread perforates faster than thread alone; count needles after every repair job.

Play that satisfies without the line

The chase does not need string. A 30 cm wand with a 15 cm feather, a crinkle tunnel, or a laser finished on a real toy all produce the same stalk and pounce, and none can be swallowed. The string is a convenience for the human, not a requirement for the cat.

For cats that want to chew, offer a 15 cm silver vine stick or 10 cm of untreated leather instead of ribbon, and rotate 3 toys a week so the wand stays interesting. A toy that cannot be found at 11 p.m. is a toy to search for before bed.

Signs that mean the clinic today

Vomiting 2 or more times in 6 hours, drooling, refusing food for 12 hours, a hunched posture, hiding in a new place, or a string visible at the mouth or anus. Any 1 of those with a missing thread is enough.

X-rays often show nothing because thread is radiolucent, so ultrasound or a barium study is the next step. Expect bloodwork and a possible 24 to 48 hour stay; surgery commonly lands between 1,500 and 4,000 dollars, the price of a 3 dollar ribbon.

Five steps for this week

  • Measure every string toy and cut anything over 20 cm down to size.
  • Set a 5-minute timer, and end each session with the string in a tin, not on the floor.
  • Move floss, hair ties and sewing thread into closed containers at 1.5 m.
  • Write the emergency clinic number on the tin lid, with the words linear foreign body.
  • Keep every session under daily supervision, and put the toy away the moment chewing starts.

Ball and bauble sizes are covered in ball size safety, and the battery side of wand toys in battery toy safety. The 20 cm and 5 minute numbers are the whole system.

Frequently asked

Why is 20 cm the limit for a string toy?

Twenty centimetres is short enough that a swallowed strand is more likely to pass than to anchor, and short enough that it will not loop a leg or catch on furniture during play. Most ribbon wands ship with 40 to 60 cm of line, which is the range that produces linear foreign bodies, so cut them down before the first session.

My cat swallowed a piece of ribbon an hour ago and seems fine. Should I wait?

No. A thread can look harmless for 12 to 24 hours while it pleats the intestine, so a calm cat proves nothing. Call the clinic, say linear foreign body, and go within 2 hours. Do not pull a visible end, do not induce vomiting, and bring the reel or the rest of the toy with you.

Are hair ties and dental floss really that dangerous?

They are the most common source of linear foreign bodies in cats. A 6 to 8 cm hair tie stretches and anchors, and 30 cm of waxed floss can pleat the whole small intestine because it resists shredding. Keep both in closed containers, and check the bathroom bin if your cat follows you in.
