Teaching a cat to turn its head when you say its name takes 7 days, 3 rounds a day, and 3 distances: 1 meter, then 2 to 3 meters, then 5 meters. Each round is 5 reps, each rep is 1 name and 1 piece of food inside 2 seconds, and the daily work is under 4 minutes.

The 1-second rule

Say the name once. Count 1 second. If the head turns toward you, mark it with a click or a short word and put food on the floor within 2 seconds. If the head does not turn, do not repeat the name: wait 10 seconds, reset, and try once more at a shorter distance.

Repeating a name 3 times trains a cat that the first 2 calls are optional, and that lesson sticks for months. Food goes on the floor rather than into the mouth for the first 2 days, because a cat that must reach your hand is being trained to approach, while the behavior wanted at 5 meters is a head turn. Approach follows within a week once looking pays.

Why 3 distances, in this order

1 meter in the room where the cat eats is the starting point, with no other person moving. 2 to 3 meters comes next, same room, owner standing. 5 meters adds a doorway or a corner, which is a real test because the cat has to break off from something else to look. Move up only when the current distance passes 4 of 5 reps for 2 rounds in a row.

Do not jump from 1 meter to 5 because day 3 went well. That jump is exactly how owners end up with a cat that turns in the kitchen and ignores them in the hallway.

The 7-day plan

DayRounds a dayReps per roundMinutes per roundDistance (m)Pass threshold
1 to 235214 of 5, 80%
3 to 435224 of 5, 80%
5 to 634235 of 6, 85%
724253 of 3, 100%
Week 2 on1311 to 5, mixed9 of 10, 90%

Add the time up: 3 rounds of 5 reps at 2 seconds each is about 1 minute of calling a day, plus 30 seconds rest between rounds. Seven days is roughly 8 minutes of real work, which is why the plan fails from inconsistency and almost never from the cat.

Protect the name

A name works only while it predicts good things and nothing else. Never use it before a pill, a nail trim, a bath, or the carrier; pick a neutral word for those, or say nothing and lift the cat. Cap the name at 10 uses a day outside training for the first month. A name called 40 times a day becomes background noise, and by week 3 the cat stops checking.

Keep the tone flat: 2 syllables, level pitch, no rising sing-song. A rising tone reads as a question, and a still body with a quiet voice gets more head turns than a loud call from across the room with the owner leaning forward.

Add 4 distractions in order

Level 1 is another person standing still in the room. Level 2 is a person walking. Level 3 is a toy dragged 2 meters away. Level 4 is a second cat in the room. Add 1 level every 2 days, and drop 1 distance if 2 of 5 reps fail. Most cats hold level 2 inside 7 days and reach level 4 by week 3, which is enough for a cat that has to be found at bedtime. The head turn is only step 1 of the recall plan, and the marker used here comes from clicker charging.

When to step back

Drop 1 distance and 1 round when 2 of 5 reps fail, when the cat looks but does not turn within 1 second, when it walks away between reps, or when it stops eating the food. Return to the last passing distance, run 2 clean rounds, then climb again. A dip on day 4 and again on day 6 shows up in most plans and costs 2 days of work.

What not to do

  • Do not say the name 3 times in a row; once per rep, then wait.
  • Do not call the cat to something it dislikes, ever.
  • Do not chase the cat after calling it; walk 2 steps away instead.
  • Do not train right after a meal or at 3 in the morning when the cat is wild.
  • Do not punish a cat that comes slowly; slow still gets paid the first week.
  • Do not use the name as a scold word, or it stops predicting food within days.

None of the plan needs a raised voice, a spray bottle, or a tap on the nose. A cat that is called correctly comes for food, and a cat that is called to punishment stops coming within 2 or 3 tries.

If the cat never turns

Check hearing first. Cats over 12 commonly lose some high-frequency hearing, and a vet can test it with a BAER exam; a cat that does not react to a bag of treats shaken 1 meter behind it needs that check before more training. Pain, dental disease, and an overactive thyroid also flatten response, and so does a cat that is simply full. Then check the reward: 10 tries with no food is not training, it is a test the cat is failing on purpose.

Keeping it after day 7

Run 1 round a day, 3 reps, at random distances, plus 1 round a week in a new room. Test with 10 reps once a month and expect 9 correct at 90 percent; below 7 means 2 days back at 1 meter. A cat that turns its head at 5 meters can be found, lifted, and medicated without a chase, and that is the practical reason to spend the 8 minutes.

Frequently asked

Should the cat come all the way to me or just look?

Start with the head turn. Looking is the behavior that survives distance, and it is what makes a cat findable at 5 meters. Once the head turn is reliable at 3 distances, most cats start walking over within a week because the food keeps arriving where you are.

How many times a day can I say the cat's name?

Ten uses a day outside training for the first month, and only 1 per rep inside training. A name called 40 times a day stops predicting anything, and the cat tunes it out within 2 or 3 weeks, which is why so many owners report that their cat has no name recognition.

What if the cat only responds in one room?

That is normal and it is called cue generalization. Charge the name again in each new room with 5 easy reps at 1 meter, then climb back to 5 meters over 2 days. Most cats need 3 rooms before the cue holds anywhere in the house.
