Most cat behavior complaints — spraying at 5 a.m., pacing the hallway, eating half a bowl and walking off — trace back to 4 kinds of environment pressure, not to personality. A 20-item audit turns that into a score out of 40 in about 15 minutes, and the score tells you which of the 4 areas to fix first. Score it monthly, and re-score 14 days after any change you make.

Score each item 0, 1, or 2

Twenty items, 4 groups of 5: resources, routes, noise, odor. Each item scores 0 for fails, 1 for marginal, 2 for meets the standard. Maximum 40, minimum 0. Two rules keep the number honest. Score what the cat actually uses, not what you bought: a 2 m tower the cat has never climbed is a 0, not a 2. And score on an ordinary weekday evening, never during a party, a move, or the week of a vet visit. An item you cannot observe in 5 minutes gets scored from memory and marked with a question mark; mark it as 1.

Resources: items 1 to 5, 10 points

  • 1. Litter boxes: 1 per cat plus 1, each at least 1.5 times the cat's body length. 3 cats means 4 boxes. Score 0 if all boxes sit in 1 room.
  • 2. Food and water at least 2 m apart, water in 2 or more locations, bowls 12 cm wide so the whiskers clear the rim.
  • 3. Scratching: 2 surfaces, 1 vertical at 60 cm or taller, 1 horizontal, both within 1 m of a sleeping spot.
  • 4. Resting height: 3 elevated places at roughly 1 m, 1.5 m and 2 m, each reachable in 1 jump.
  • 5. Hiding: 2 covered places a human hand cannot enter, and neither of them is the carrier.

Routes: items 6 to 10, 10 points

  • 6. A loop: the cat can cross the main room at furniture height in 3 hops without touching the floor.
  • 7. No dead end: every room has 2 exits, or 1 exit plus a shelf within 1.2 m of the doorway.
  • 8. Sightlines: from 2 resting spots the cat can see the doorway it gets approached from.
  • 9. Door traffic: fewer than 6 door passes per hour in the busiest evening hour.
  • 10. Floor grip: no 3 m run where the cat slides on turns. If it slides, add 2 runners and score 0 until you do.

Noise: items 11 to 15, 10 points

Measure at cat height, 30 cm off the floor, with a phone meter app. Human ears forgive what a cat at 2 m from a speaker does not.

  • 11. Background noise under 50 dB by day and under 40 dB from 22:00 to 07:00.
  • 12. No appliance above 60 dB within 2 m of a resting spot.
  • 13. Doorbell, intercom or knock masked by a 50 dB white-noise track during the 2 hours you expect visitors.
  • 14. Washer, dryer or dishwasher at least 3 m from the litter box and the bed.
  • 15. Fewer than 3 sudden sounds above 70 dB per hour in a 2 hour evening sample.

Odor: items 16 to 20, 10 points

  • 16. Litter scooped 2 times a day, full change every 14 days for clumping litter and every 7 days for non-clumping.
  • 17. No plug-in freshener, scented litter or citrus cleaner in the cat's core 30 square meters. These hide 1 smell and add 2 irritants.
  • 18. Scent continuity: 1 unwashed blanket per resting spot, bedding washed every 30 days rather than every 7.
  • 19. No urine smell a human nose can catch at 30 cm from the box. If it is there, clean with an enzyme product 2 rounds, 10 minutes apart.
  • 20. No new-object smell lasting past 48 hours after a delivery, dry cleaning run or new rug.

Below 18, stop adding toys. The room itself is the problem, and 4 more toys will not move a score built on 5 failing resources.

What not to do with the sheet

Do not fix 20 items in one weekend; change 2 or 3, wait 14 days, re-score, because a cat needs roughly 2 weeks to settle into a new route. Do not move the litter box as a punishment or to a garage corner to get it out of sight, since item 1 and item 7 both crash. Do not score a closed door as a resource: a room the cat cannot enter is a 0 on items 5, 7 and 8 at once. Do not add air freshener to pass item 19; it fails item 17 and does nothing about ammonia. And do not re-score during the first 48 hours after a change, when every cat looks worse.

Frequency and the 15-minute routine

Run the audit on the same date each month, in the same 2 rooms, between 18:00 and 20:00. Ten minutes to walk the 20 items, 3 minutes to count boxes, bowls and perches, 2 minutes to write the 3 lowest items on the fridge. Keep 6 months of totals on one page. A drop of 4 points or more between 2 months is a signal on its own, even if the absolute score is still above 26. Seasonal shifts count too: heating season dries the air below 40 percent humidity, static shocks rise, and items 10 and 15 often fall by 2 points in November.

Then hand 3 fixes to the cat, not to the house

The audit is only a map. Each of the 3 lowest items becomes 1 change with a number attached: 1 more box 1.5 body lengths long, 1 shelf at 1.2 m by the door, 1 white-noise track at 50 dB from 21:30. Watch 1 behavior for 14 days — where the cat sleeps, how often it uses the box, whether it eats within 10 minutes. If the score rises and the behavior does not move, the environment was not the main driver, and a vet visit is the next step rather than a 21st item. For cats that already show repetitive or self-directed behavior, pair the audit with a structured plan such as the towel wrap routine or the tap obsession plan, and check breed-typical activity needs with the breed quiz.

Frequently asked

How soon should I re-score after fixing the 3 lowest items?

Re-score 14 days after the change, then monthly on the same date. A cat needs about 2 weeks to settle into a new route, so a score taken 2 or 3 days after moving a box or adding a shelf measures disruption rather than improvement.

Does a total of 30 out of 40 mean the environment is fine?

No. A total of 30 can still hide 3 or 4 items scored 0 inside one group, and those items usually explain the behavior. Read the zeros first, then the group with the lowest subtotal, even when the total sits in the 26 to 33 band.

My cat ignores the tower I bought. Does that count as a resource?

Score what the cat uses, not what you own. A 2 m tower it has never climbed is a 0 on item 4 until it uses the thing 3 times a week, and the fix may be moving it 1 m toward a window or adding a step at 50 cm.
