Play aggression is the hunting sequence aimed at a moving human, and it is the most common reason a cat between 1 and 3 years old draws blood. Two variables decide whether it happens: how far the cat's teeth are from your hand, and what the cat is allowed to grab at the end of a chase.

What play aggression actually looks like

Four signals separate it from fear: pupils stay dilated for 10 seconds or more after a pause, the tail lashes at 1 to 2 beats per second, the pounce comes 2 to 3 seconds after a crouch behind a door frame, and the back legs kick for 5 to 10 seconds once contact is made. A frightened cat hisses, flattens its ears, retreats, and needs 30 minutes or more to settle. A playing cat comes back for more within 10 seconds. Play targets movement; fear targets proximity.

Why 60 cm is the floor, not a preference

A wand shorter than 60 cm puts your hand inside the bite radius. A cat's forward reach from a planted front paw is 25 to 35 cm, and a 4.5 kg adult can cover 1.5 meters in a single pounce. A 60 cm wand plus a 30 cm line gives about 90 cm of separation, which is the minimum for an average adult cat. Large cats need more: a 6 kg cat does better with 75 cm and a 40 cm line, and a 9 kg Maine Coon with 90 cm and 45 cm. Check the expected adult size for your cat in the breed quiz before buying, because the wand that suits a 4 kg cat is short for a 7 kg one.

Hands are not prey, ever

Anything small enough to fit behind the molars is a swallow risk too, which the size guide covers. Every hand-toy session rewards a bite once. A bite that makes the game continue is a bite that repeats, and the interval between repeats shortens from weeks to days. When a bite lands, freeze rather than pull, because a pull tears 0.5 to 1 cm of skin and turns a warning into a wound. Stop the session for 60 seconds, leave the room for 2 minutes, and come back with the wand at floor level. Trim nails every 10 to 14 days, and wear a long sleeve for the first 2 weeks of retraining.

Two sessions of 15 minutes

Fifteen minutes twice a day gives 30 minutes of hunting, which is enough for most indoor adults. Split each session 5-8-2: 5 minutes of slow floor work to start the stalk, 8 minutes at peak with 3 or 4 full sprints, and 2 minutes of winding down that ends in a catch. Under 8 months, use 3 sessions of 10 minutes instead. Over 10 years, use 2 sessions of 10 minutes with jumps under 30 cm. Time the sessions 30 minutes before meals and right after you come home, because the two predictable arousal peaks are hunger and the return of the person who feeds the cat.

Space and body mechanics

Work at 1.5 to 2 meters of separation and drag the toy along the floor at 20 to 30 cm per second. Keep the toy below the cat's shoulder height, because an overhead swing within 30 cm of your face turns a stalk into a face pounce. Learn the stillness tell: a flat crouch that holds for 2 seconds is a pounce about to launch, so drop the wand to the floor and pull it away from your body. End each session on the far side of the room, not at your feet. In hot weather, a water toy can absorb 3 to 4 minutes of the session without hands. On a hard floor, slow the drag to 15 cm per second, because a toy that skids away at 40 cm per second turns a stalk into a frustrated lunge at your ankle.

The redirect that works mid-attack

When the cat is already locked on, do not reach for it. Throw a soft toy 1 to 2 meters past its shoulder and let the chase restart on something legal, then hand over the wand within 10 seconds. If there is nothing to throw, stand still and look away, because movement is the trigger and a still human loses 80 percent of its appeal in about 3 seconds. Do not run: a cat that chases a running person is being rewarded for chasing, and the habit generalizes to visitors within 2 to 3 repetitions.

When it stops being play

Get a veterinary exam and a behavior consult if a cat breaks skin 3 or more times in 14 days, if it stalks a child under 5, if it blocks a doorway and guards it, or if the behavior started after age 7 in a cat that never bit before. Pain is the first thing to rule out: dental disease, arthritis, and hyperthyroidism all lower a cat's bite threshold. Punishment, including tapping the nose or spraying water, reliably makes it worse by adding fear to arousal.

Five steps for this week

  • Measure the wand; under 60 cm is a hand toy with extra steps.
  • Move every hand game to a 60 cm wand and a 30 cm line.
  • Book 2 sessions of 15 minutes at the same times daily.
  • Drop the 5 risky toys from the house this week.
  • Freeze, end the session, and leave for 2 minutes after any bite.

Frequently asked

How long should a cat wand be?

At least 60 cm of wand with a 30 cm line for an average 4.5 kg adult, which gives about 90 cm between your hand and the cat. Use 75 cm for a 6 kg cat and 90 cm for a large breed like a Maine Coon, because a shorter wand puts your hand inside the bite radius.

Why does my cat bite me during play?

Because the hunting sequence has no legal target at the end. A wand under 60 cm, hand play, or a laser with no catch all teach the cat that skin is the thing to grab. Move every game to a long wand, end each session on a toy the cat can bite, and freeze instead of pulling when a bite lands.

How long does retraining take?

Most cats improve within 2 to 3 weeks of consistent 2 by 15 minute sessions with a 60 cm wand, and the first week usually looks worse because the cat tests the old routine. If skin is broken 3 or more times in 14 days, get a veterinary exam for pain before continuing.
