Seasonal pollen allergy is one of the most common reasons a cat starts scratching every spring, and it is read from the pattern rather than confirmed by a single test. Itching that begins in March, peaks in May, eases by September and settles on the face, ears, paws and belly points at pollen. The workable response is unglamorous: cut the pollen the coat carries indoors, filter the air in the room the cat actually uses, and rule food allergy in or out before paying for an allergy panel.
What environmental allergy looks like in a cat
Vets call it feline atopic dermatitis. Cats rarely sneeze the way people do; the allergen lands on skin, so the signs show up on skin.
Four patterns cover most cases. Head and neck: scratching the chin, rubbing cheeks on furniture, thinning hair in front of the ears. Ears: repeated otitis with brown wax, head shaking, a raw spot after scratching. Paws: licking between the toes and chewing the pads, often at 2 or 3 a.m. Belly and thighs: bald, pink, slightly thickened skin. Most cats start between 1 and 3 years old, and roughly 60 to 80 percent are seasonal for the first 2 years before the itching spreads across the calendar.
The pollen calendar
Tree pollen runs February to May, grass May to July, weeds such as ragweed August to October. Counts peak twice a day, about 5 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., and climb on dry, warm, windy days. Rain scrubs pollen out of the air and can halve counts for hours, so a wet morning is the best window for balcony time. Shut the windows on high-count days and open them after rain.
Paw rinsing: how often and how
Rinse or wipe the paws every time the cat comes in from a balcony, garden or walk during peak season, which usually means 1 to 2 times a day. Use lukewarm water at about 30 to 35 C, no shampoo, and 15 to 20 seconds per paw. Dry between the toes with a towel, because moisture left there feeds yeast. A damp microfiber cloth over the coat lifts settled pollen without stripping the skin, and one bath every 7 to 14 days with a mild colloidal oatmeal shampoo handles the rest. Skip scented wipes, which add fragrance to skin that is already inflamed.
Air purifier: match CADR to the room
CADR means clean air delivery rate and is quoted in cubic meters per hour. For about 5 air changes an hour in a room with a 2.5 m ceiling, the CADR in m3/h should be at least 12 times the floor area in square meters: a 20 m2 bedroom needs 240 to 250 m3/h, a 12 m2 study about 145 m3/h. Choose a true HEPA filter rated H13 rather than an ionizer, and keep the unit 30 cm off the wall so it can pull air. Run it low overnight, which should stay under 30 dB, and replace the filter every 6 to 12 months, or every 3 months in a home with smokers.
Lower the indoor pollen load
Pollen arrives on shoes, coats and window screens. Take shoes off at the door, wash slipcovers weekly at 40 C, and wipe sills with a damp cloth twice a week instead of dry dusting, which only lifts the grains again. Keep the litter box away from the purifier intake, since clay dust shortens filter life.
Once the heating comes on, windows stay shut for months and humidity drops, which keeps fine dust and pollen grains airborne longer. Room-level fixes are in dry indoor air and upper respiratory signs, and the temperature side is in winter cold and heating.
Pollen allergy or food allergy
Both itch, both are common, and the pattern separates them most of the time.
| Feature | Environmental allergy | Food allergy |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Seasonal at first, worse after outdoor time | Year-round, no seasonal shift |
| Age at onset | Usually 1 to 3 years | Any age, often under 1 year |
| Itchiest spots | Face, ears, paws, belly | Head, neck, ears |
| Vomiting or diarrhea | Uncommon | About 30 percent of cases |
| Antihistamine response | Partial in some cats | Poor |
| How it is confirmed | History plus exclusion | 8 to 12 week elimination diet |
Blood IgE panels are unreliable in cats and should not be the deciding test. The real test is an 8 to 12 week elimination diet using hydrolyzed or single novel protein food, with no treats, no table food and no flavored medication, followed by a controlled challenge of the old food. Keep the daily portion steady through the trial, and set the gram target from the cat's weight with the food calculator.
Conditions that mimic allergy
Flea allergy dermatitis (one bite sets off days of itching), ear mites, ringworm, pemphigus foliaceus and mosquito bite hypersensitivity all look similar. A skin scrape, a flea comb and cytology are cheap, take minutes, and are worth doing before any long course of steroids.
What the vet may prescribe
Antihistamines help perhaps 20 to 30 percent of cats. Oral prednisolone usually starts near 0.5 to 1 mg per kg and tapers; cyclosporine runs about 5 mg per kg once daily; oclacitinib is used off-label at roughly 1 mg per kg twice daily. Every one of those numbers is a starting point that a vet adjusts for weight, kidney values and concurrent illness, so do not dose at home from an article. Allergen immunotherapy needs 6 to 12 months before you can judge it.
A seven-step plan for the season
- Log the scratching for 2 weeks, by body area and time of day.
- Wipe or rinse paws after every outdoor trip, 1 to 2 times daily at peak.
- Run a H13 purifier sized at 12 times the floor area in m3/h, 24 hours a day.
- Wash bedding and slipcovers weekly at 40 C; no dry dusting.
- Ask the vet for a flea check and skin cytology before starting steroids.
- If itching is year-round, start an 8 to 12 week elimination diet.
- Book a recheck at 4 weeks so the plan is adjusted on evidence, not guesses.
Frequently asked
Can I use human allergy pills for my cat?
Only with a vet's approval and an exact weight-based dose. Several over-the-counter antihistamines are unsafe or poorly absorbed in cats, and combination products often contain decongestants that are toxic. Antihistamines also help only about 20 to 30 percent of allergic cats, so a failed trial does not mean the cat is not allergic.
How big an air purifier does one cat need?
Size it to the room, not to the cat. Aim for a HEPA unit whose CADR in cubic meters per hour is at least 12 times the floor area in square meters, so roughly 240 m3/h for a 20 m2 bedroom. A single cat does not change the math much; an open-plan room does.
Does shaving my cat help with pollen?
A full shave is rarely useful and can cause sunburn on thin-skinned areas and ingrown hairs as the coat regrows. Wiping the coat with a damp microfiber cloth after outdoor time removes far more pollen with less risk, and a lion cut is only worth discussing with a groomer for severe matting.
