Hearing is usually the first sense to fade, starting around 8 to 10 years; smell follows near 11 to 12; contrast vision slips after about 10. None of the three announces itself. A cat that stops answering a call is often called stubborn for 6 to 12 months before anyone tests the ears. Four changes to the house — light, steps, litter, food — buy back much of what the senses lose, and none of them takes more than 15 minutes to set up.

Hearing goes first, and the high notes go before the low

Cats hear to roughly 64 kHz against the human 20 kHz, and age-related loss attacks the top of that range first. A 12-year-old may still notice a door slam while missing the 8 kHz rustle of a treat bag. Presbycusis is gradual and affects both ears; most owners notice it between 8 and 10 years, and by 15 a large share of cats have a measurable loss on BAER testing. Wax plugs, polyps and middle-ear disease are worth ruling out first, because those are treatable.

Test at home in 3 steps. Stand 2 m behind the cat, out of sight, and clap once at normal volume. Repeat 3 times with 30-second gaps. Then do the same with a set of keys. A cat that reacts to 2 of 3 claps hears the middle range. A cat that reacts to 0 of 3 claps but turns when you tap the floor still has low-frequency hearing. Never test with the food bag alone: the smell reaches the cat before the sound does, which is why deaf cats still come running.

Smell at 11 to 12, and the senior who stops eating

The olfactory epithelium covers a large surface, and smell is the cat's main tool for deciding that something is food. Decline usually becomes visible around 11 to 12 years. A cat eating half a portion is often not nauseated but unable to identify the bowl's contents as edible. Warm a portion to 30 to 35°C — body temperature, never hot — and the volatile fraction rises sharply. Serve within 5 minutes, because a bowl that cools to 22°C loses that edge. Strong-smelling toppers work for the same reason, and so does splitting 2 meals into 4 smaller ones, because a cat that stops eating also stops stimulating a gut that already secretes less digestive enzyme activity with age.

Vision: contrast, not sharpness

Senior lenses thicken and yellow, the pupil responds more slowly, and the practical loss is contrast sensitivity in low light rather than acuity. Most older cats still track a moving toy across a bright room and still fail to see a stationary bowl in a dim corner at 2 to 3 lux, which is roughly a hallway at night with one small lamp.

Watch 3 behaviors: hesitation at a threshold, walking with whiskers forward and nose low, and missing a jump by 5 to 10 cm. Sudden change is a different problem. Sudden blindness, a pupil that stays wide in bright light, or a red haze inside the eye needs a same-day exam with blood pressure, because retinal detachment from systolic pressure over 160 mmHg is a common and time-critical cause. Lens changes are slow and bilateral; anything that happens in 24 to 72 hours is not aging.

The sense timeline, with numbers you can test

The onset ages below are typical, not diagnostic. Use the right-hand column as a home check you can repeat every 90 days.

SenseOnsetHome checkTarget
Hearing8-10 yrclap out of sight at 2 m, 3 trials2 of 3
Smell11-12 yrinterest in food warmed to 30-35°Cunder 5 min

Two rows matter more than the rest. A cat that fails the 2 m clap test but passes the bench jump is adapting well and needs light, not treatment. A cat that passes the clap test and starts missing the 40 cm bench has a balance or joint problem, and the ears are not the explanation.

Four changes to the house

Light first: put 2 to 3 lux night lights, about the brightness of a phone screen at arm's length, in the hallway, the kitchen and beside the litter box. Old eyes need 2 to 3 times more light than young ones for the same contrast, and a 3 W warm LED at floor level costs almost nothing to run.

Steps second: any surface above 30 cm gets a ramp at 20 to 25 degrees or a 2-step stair with a 15 cm rise, with a non-slip surface so the pads and claws can grip on the way up. Third, litter: entry height under 10 cm, one box per floor, within 5 m of the sleeping spot, and unscented litter because a dulled nose reads strong scent as noise. Fourth, food and water within 3 m of the bed, bowl raised 5 to 10 cm, on a non-slip mat, with the water changed twice a day.

Keep the furniture where it is. A blind or dim-sighted cat runs a mental map, and moving 1 chair can cost it 2 to 3 days of bumping. If you must rearrange, do it in 1 room at a time and lead the cat around the new layout twice.

What has to go to the vet

Same day: sudden blindness, pupils of different sizes, a head tilt with flickering eyes, or new night yowling in a cat that used to sleep through. Within 1 to 2 weeks: 5 percent weight loss in 3 months, appetite down for 48 hours, or a systolic reading above 160 mmHg. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), hyperthyroidism and hypertension all blunt appetite and senses before they show up in behavior, and all 3 are common after 10 years. Dental pain is the other frequent culprit: a cat with sore molars stops eating and starts dropping food, which looks exactly like a lost sense of smell.

Five steps for this week

  • Run the 3-trial clap test and the 2 to 3 lux toy test, and write both results down with the date.
  • Add 2 night lights and 1 non-slip mat, and move the water bowl within 3 m of the sleeping spot.
  • Warm food to 30 to 35°C for 5 minutes and split the daily ration into 4 servings of 25 to 30 g.
  • Add a ramp to any jump over 30 cm and lower the litter box entry to under 10 cm.
  • Book a senior check with blood pressure, thyroid and kidney panel if the cat is 10 or older (see the age chart for the life stage), then repeat every 6 months.

Frequently asked

How can I tell if my older cat is going deaf?

Clap once at normal volume from 2 m behind the cat, out of sight, and repeat 3 times with 30-second gaps. Reacting to 2 of 3 suggests middle-range hearing is intact. Zero reactions plus a turn when you tap the floor means only low frequencies remain. Ask for a BAER test if the result changes what you would do.

Why does my 13-year-old cat eat less but seem hungry?

Smell decline near 11 to 12 years is one common reason: the cat cannot identify the food. Warm a portion to 30 to 35°C and serve it within 5 minutes, split meals into 4 smaller servings, and rule out dental pain and CKD with a vet visit if weight falls 5 percent in 3 months.

Is night yowling in old cats just aging?

It is common but not harmless. New night vocalizing can come from hypertension, hyperthyroidism, pain, or cognitive change, and blood pressure over 160 mmHg can damage the retina within days. A same-week visit with blood pressure and bloodwork is the right response, not a louder night light.
