Two adhesive families cause almost every cat glue case: cyanoacrylate, the super glue that bonds skin in about 10 seconds, and construction adhesives such as polyurethane and epoxy that cure over 24 hours and turn into a solid mass in the stomach. The two rules that matter most: never pull glued skin apart, and treat 6 hours as the line after which a glue ring around a toe or the tail starts cutting circulation.

Two families, two different failures

Cyanoacrylate cures on contact with moisture, which is why it grabs skin in 5 to 10 seconds and sets hard in under 60 seconds. It also releases heat as it polymerizes, so a blob the size of a pea can reach 60 to 70 °C at the skin surface and leave a small thermal burn under the bond. Construction adhesive, polyurethane foam and 2-part epoxy are the opposite: 12 to 24 hours to full cure, strong solvents, and a cured plug that a cat's 2.5 m of intestine cannot move along.

White craft glue and school glue are the low-risk end. They are water-based, pass through in 24 to 48 hours, and mostly cause 1 loose stool.

The 6-hour line

Six hours is not when the glue becomes toxic. It is when a band of hardened glue around a toe, a tail or a paw starts acting like a tourniquet. Tissue under a rigid ring swells within 2 to 6 hours, the swelling has nowhere to go, and blood flow drops. By 12 to 24 hours the skin past the ring is cold, pale and losing sensation, and that is a surgical problem rather than a grooming problem. One bonded toe and a whole bonded paw sit on the same 6-hour clock.

Why you never pull glued skin apart

Cat skin is roughly 1 to 2 mm thick, and the bond is stronger than the layer holding it. Pulling two glued surfaces apart tears the stratum corneum and often the full thickness of the epidermis, which converts a 5 mm glue spot into a raw wound the size of a coin, with bleeding and a real infection risk. The correct move is patience: warm water, soap, time, and a blunt instrument at the edge — never a tug.

The exception is the eye. Glue on an eyelid is a same-hour vet visit, because the lids can bond to the cornea and every minute of pressure adds damage.

Two things not to do

Do not pull, peel, cut or rip the bond apart. Do not reach for acetone, nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol or hot water. Acetone does dissolve cyanoacrylate, and it also strips the skin's barrier and burns on contact; a cat that then grooms the paw swallows the solvent. Hot water is worse than warm: it softens the glue's grip on the fur, drives it deeper into the skin, and adds a scald on top of a chemical bond. Warm water at 37 to 40 °C with a grease-cutting soap is the only home solvent worth using.

The home routine, if the glue is on fur and the cat is calm: soak the area in 37 to 40 °C soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes, work a little mineral oil or vegetable oil along the edge with a cotton bud, and stop the moment the skin starts to redden. Repeat 2 to 3 times over 24 hours rather than forcing it in 1 session. If the bond does not lift after 3 soaks, that is a vet visit, not a stronger solvent.

When the glue went down the throat

Cured cyanoacrylate passes as an inert lump in most cases, but a bead 1 to 2 cm across can lodge at the narrowest points: the esophagus, the pylorus, the 2 cm ileocecal junction. Signs are vomiting, retching, drooling and refusing food, usually inside 6 to 24 hours. Polyurethane foam is the harder one, because it keeps expanding for 30 to 60 minutes after contact with stomach fluid and can fill a large part of the stomach. A cat that swallowed foam and is retching needs imaging the same day, not a 3-day wait.

Bring the tube. The label tells the vet the polymer, the cure time and the solvent in under 10 seconds, and that changes whether the plan is observation, endoscopy or surgery.

What the vet will do

For skin, expect sedation if the cat is fractious, a prolonged warm soak, blunt separation with a wooden spatula or forceps, and mineral oil to roll the glue off the fur. For a glue ring with compromised circulation, the vet may need to cut the ring in 2 places. For ingestion, an X-ray or ultrasound, endoscopy within the first 6 to 12 hours if the mass is still in the stomach, and surgery if it has moved past the pylorus. Antibiotics and pain relief are prescription decisions, and a burn under the bond may need a dressing change every 24 to 48 hours for 5 to 7 days.

Keeping the tube out of reach

  • Store every cyanoacrylate tube in 1 closed box at 150 cm or higher, cap on, in the same place every time.
  • Work over a paper towel, and keep the cat out of the room for the 5 minutes the glue is wet.
  • Wipe a spill with paper towel and throw it away; a glue-soaked towel in the bin is a chew toy with a hard core.
  • Keep a 50 ml bottle of mineral oil and a blunt-tip clipper in the same box, so the first 10 minutes do not involve searching.

If the tube is unlabelled or the cat also licked a solvent, run it through the toxin lookup before you leave. Glue cases often come with a mouth ulcer from a chewed plant, covered in the houseplant emergency list. A cat that comes home after sedation and a soak may need 24 to 48 hours of quiet monitoring, the same routine described in post-catheter aftercare.

Frequently asked

Can I use nail polish remover to get super glue off my cat?

No. Acetone dissolves cyanoacrylate but also strips the skin barrier and burns on contact, and a cat that grooms the paw afterward swallows it. Use warm water at 37 to 40 °C with grease-cutting dish soap for 10 to 15 minutes, then mineral oil along the edge. If 3 soaks do not free the bond, see a vet.

How urgent is glue on a cat's paw?

Treat it as a 6-hour case. A hardened ring around a toe or paw acts like a tourniquet: swelling starts in 2 to 6 hours, and by 12 to 24 hours the skin beyond the ring is cold and pale. Glue on an eyelid or the lips is a 1-hour emergency because the lids can bond to the cornea.

My cat swallowed a drop of super glue. Will it pass?

Usually yes, because cured cyanoacrylate is inert and small beads move through in 24 to 72 hours. A lump of 1 to 2 cm can lodge at the esophagus, pylorus or ileocecal junction, so watch for vomiting and retching over the next 6 to 24 hours. Polyurethane foam keeps expanding and needs same-day imaging.
