Radiotherapy for a cat is not 1 product with 1 price. It is 3 products, and the spread between the cheapest and the most expensive is about 5 times: a palliative course runs roughly 700 to 1,600 US dollars, a definitive course 3,000 to 5,500, and a stereotactic course 5,500 to 8,000. Every quote you receive should break down into the same 4 line items, and the table below puts all 3 courses side by side for 3 regions.

Before the first fraction, ask for a written estimate with a stated accuracy of plus or minus 15 percent, ask who bills the anesthesia, and ask what a re-plan costs if the cat loses 5 percent of body weight during a 4 week course.

3 types, and why the price triples

Palliative radiotherapy is 1 to 3 fractions. The common protocols are a single 8 Gray (Gy) dose for bone pain, or 4 Gy on 3 consecutive days for a bleeding mass. Chair time is 15 to 20 minutes, anesthesia 10 to 15 minutes, and the cat goes home the same afternoon. This is the 700 to 1,600 band.

Definitive radiotherapy is 15 to 20 fractions of 2.4 to 3.0 Gy, 5 days a week for 3 to 4 weeks, to a total of 45 to 54 Gy. That means 15 to 20 anesthetics, 15 to 20 car trips and 15 to 20 chances for a setup error. This is the 3,000 to 5,500 band.

Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is 1 to 5 fractions of 8 to 12 Gy each, with 1 to 2 mm setup accuracy, often on 3 consecutive days. The machine and the physics time cost 10 to 20 times more than a standard linear accelerator, and the invoice shows it: 5,500 to 8,000.

The 4 line items inside every quote

Consultation and staging, 80 to 250. This covers the exam, blood work and usually a CT of the chest, which is not optional before a 3 week course because 2 to 5 percent of cats have lung changes that change the plan.

Planning, 400 to 1,200. CT simulation, contouring of the tumor plus 2 or 3 organs at risk, and a physics check. SRT planning sits at the top of that range, 900 to 1,200, because it takes 3 to 6 hours of a physicist's day.

Fractions, 120 to 260 each for a standard course and 900 to 1,600 each for SRT. Multiply by the number of fractions and you have 60 to 80 percent of the total bill.

Anesthesia and monitoring, 60 to 150 per fraction. Some clinics fold this into the fraction price, some bill it as a separate 4th line, and some add 40 to 80 for a dedicated anesthesia nurse. Ask which one you are looking at, because over 20 fractions that difference is 800 to 3,000.

3 regions, 1 table

Prices are typical private quotes for a 4 kg cat, converted to US dollars at October 2026 rates, and exclude 20 percent value added tax where it applies. The UK column is private practice; there is no NHS route for a cat, but many UK insurers reimburse at these levels.

Consult 260 plus standard planning 850 plus 4,300 lands at 5,410 in the US and 3,300 in the UK, and the same three items come to 10,820 CNY in China; with the SRT plan and course the same clinic bills 7,910. That 3,300 to 7,910 spread is the real content of the 3,000 to 8,000 range.

5 things that quietly double the bill

Weight loss. A cat that drops 5 percent of body weight in week 2 of a 4 week course no longer fits the mask, and a re-plan costs 400 to 900 plus a second CT at 150 to 300.

Extra imaging. A cone beam CT check on each of 20 fractions can add 20 to 40 per fraction, which is 400 to 800 over the course.

Out of hours delivery. Weekend or after hours slots carry a 25 to 40 percent surcharge in many practices.

Anesthesia risk work. A cat with chronic kidney disease (CKD) needs a chemistry panel, blood pressure and often 1 night of fluids before fraction 1: 200 to 600.

Travel. At 20 fractions and 2 trips per fraction, a 40 km round trip is 800 km. Fuel, parking and 1 missed day of work per week are part of the real cost, and no quote includes them.

Insurance, payment plans and 3 questions

Pet insurance typically reimburses 70 to 90 percent after a deductible of 250 to 500, against an annual limit of 5,000 to 10,000. Radiotherapy is usually covered when it is not a pre-existing condition, and most policies want the claim within 30 to 90 days of the invoice. Pre-authorization takes 5 to 10 business days, so start it before the planning CT, not after.

Payment plans run 3 to 12 months at 0 to 24 percent annual interest. A 5,410 bill over 12 months at 12 percent is about 481 per month; the same bill over 6 months is about 936. Ask for the total repayable, not the monthly figure.

Three questions close most of the gap: is the estimate binding within 15 percent, who provides anesthesia and is that person a board certified anesthesiologist, and what exactly does the 2 week recheck include.

When the cheap quote costs more

A planning CT with 2 mm slices and a 1 cm margin is what keeps a 2 cm tumor inside the field. Plain radiographs and a hand drawn field can miss by 5 to 10 mm, and a geographic miss means a second course at 60 to 70 percent of the first price, with a lower dose ceiling because normal tissue has already been hit.

For a nasal tumor, 1 to 2 mm of daily setup error over 20 fractions is the difference between 45 Gy in the target and 45 Gy plus 6 Gy into the eye. The planning line item is not the place to bargain.

Before you pay, in 5 steps

  • Get the 4 line items in writing, with the fraction count and the dose per fraction stated: 15 fractions at 2.7 Gy is 40.5 Gy, and you can check that yourself.
  • Confirm whether anesthesia is inside the fraction price; a 90 difference over 20 fractions is 1,800.
  • Ask for the re-plan and recheck prices before fraction 1, when you still have leverage.
  • Send the estimate to your insurer for pre-authorization on day 1; approval takes 5 to 10 business days.
  • Compare the total, not the first visit. A 700 palliative course and a 5,410 definitive course answer different questions.

If the choice is between a course you can finish and a better course you cannot, say so out loud at the consult. A 15 fraction plan delivered completely beats a 20 fraction plan abandoned at fraction 11, and most radiation teams will adjust the protocol rather than see that happen. For the surrounding costs of the visits themselves, see how often cats actually see a vet, and for the organ support that sometimes runs alongside, transfusion and dialysis costs. A running total by line item is easier to keep in the cost tracker.

Frequently asked

Is 3,000 to 8,000 USD a realistic total for cat radiotherapy?

Yes, for 1 course including workup. A palliative plan of 1 to 3 fractions usually lands at 1,000 to 1,800 all in, a 15 to 20 fraction definitive course at 3,300 to 5,410, and a 3 to 5 fraction stereotactic course at 4,940 to 7,910. Ask for a written estimate broken into consult, planning, fractions and anesthesia before you commit.

Can I split the cost of radiotherapy into payments?

Most specialty centers offer 3 to 12 month plans at 0 to 24 percent annual interest, and insurers reimburse 70 to 90 percent after a 250 to 500 deductible. Submit the estimate for pre-authorization at least 5 to 10 business days before the planning CT, because approval usually has to be in place before the first fraction.

Why does stereotactic radiotherapy cost 2 to 3 times more than a standard course?

SRT needs 1 to 2 mm setup accuracy, a 3 to 6 hour physics plan and a machine that costs 10 to 20 times a standard linear accelerator, but it delivers the whole course in 1 to 5 fractions instead of 15 to 20. You pay more per visit and less in anesthesia events, car trips and missed work days.
