Three numbers decide whether a cat boards the plane: 15, 21, and 120. The cat needs a 15-digit ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccine, then 21 days of waiting after that first shot, and for the UK or Ireland route a tapeworm treatment given 24 to 120 hours before arrival. Miss any one of them by a day and the cat stays behind, because border staff check documents, not intentions.

Chip first, vaccine second

The order is legal, not stylistic. A rabies vaccination only counts for travel if the microchip was in place when the vet injected, so a cat chipped 3 days after its shot needs the vaccine repeated and the 21-day clock restarted. The chip must be ISO 11784/11785 compliant, 15 digits, read at 134.2 kHz; a 9-digit or 10-digit legacy chip needs a reader the border vet may not have, so carry your own scanner or have the cat re-chipped and re-vaccinated. Ask the vet to scan the chip in front of you and write the number into the passport by hand, then check the digits match.

The 21-day clock, and what resets it

Primary rabies vaccination is legal from 12 weeks of age. The 21-day waiting period starts the day after the injection, so a shot on 1 May allows entry on 22 May. Boosters given inside the expiry date keep the cat eligible with no wait; a booster given 1 day late restarts the 21 days, which is the single most common reason a trip gets cancelled. Most EU vaccines carry a 1 to 3 year validity, and the passport must show the batch number, the date, and the vet's signature. Keep a photo of that page on your phone.

Who can issue an EU pet passport

Only an authorised vet in an EU country can issue the passport, under Regulation (EU) No 576/2013. A US or UK vet cannot; the cat enters on an EU health certificate instead, then gets a passport inside the EU. Non-commercial movement allows up to 5 animals per person, and the trip must not transfer ownership. The passport stays valid while the rabies booster stays in date, so a cat that lapses for 2 years starts again with a new certificate and, from some countries, a new 21-day wait.

Coming from outside the EU: 0.5 IU/ml

From an unlisted country, the cat needs a rabies antibody titration of at least 0.5 IU/ml from an approved laboratory, sampled at least 30 days after vaccination, followed by a 3-month wait before entry. That 90-day wait is why a move to Europe takes planning 4 to 6 months ahead. The health certificate is valid for 10 days for EU entry, and some airlines want it issued within 7 days of the flight. Tapeworm and tick treatment rules differ by destination, so check the current rules for the exact country 8 weeks out, not the week of the flight.

The UK and Ireland channel

The UK accepts EU pet passports on the approved route and requires tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before arrival, recorded in the passport with the product name, the time, and the vet's stamp. The requirement is written for dogs, and cats are not currently a legal target of it, but Ireland's rules and several carriers ask for proof of worming inside that window, so the safe play is to have it done and documented 48 hours before check-in. Cats also travel as freight or in the cabin on specified routes only, and the Eurotunnel check-in asks for 60 to 90 minutes before departure.

Cabin, carrier, and the 8 kg limit

Most European carriers cap cabin pets at 8 kg including the bag, with a carrier of about 40 by 30 by 20 cm that fits under the seat. Book the pet space at the same time as your own ticket, since many flights carry 2 to 4 pets and the slots go first. Do not sedate: at altitude a sedated cat cannot right itself, and most vets advise against it for a flight under 6 hours. Feed a normal meal 4 hours before departure, offer water at the gate, and line the carrier with an absorbent pad changed at every 3 to 4 hours of travel.

Eight weeks before you fly

  • Week 8: scan the chip, confirm it reads 15 digits, and book the rabies appointment if the booster expires inside 12 months.
  • Week 6: confirm the airline's carrier size and the 8 kg limit in writing, and reserve the pet slot.
  • Week 4: check the destination country's tapeworm and tick rules and the entry point you will use.
  • Week 1: vet visit for the health certificate, the tapeworm dose inside 24 to 120 hours, and a photocopy of every page.
  • Day of travel: arrive 90 minutes early, carry water, and keep the passport in your hand, not in the checked bag.

Travel stress is easier to manage when the cat already tolerates a carrier at home, and a senior cat needs a slower plan: the cat age tool shows when a cat counts as senior, and the American Shorthair care calendar lists the vaccination and parasite dates to line up with your departure.

Frequently asked

Can my cat travel on a UK-issued passport after Brexit?

A GB-issued passport is not accepted for entry into the EU. The cat needs an EU pet passport issued by an authorised EU vet, or an EU health certificate valid for 10 days plus proof of a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days earlier. Plan a vet visit inside the first days after arrival to convert the paperwork.

What happens if the 21-day rabies wait is not met?

The cat is refused entry, and the usual outcome is quarantine or return on the next available flight at your cost. There is no waiver at the border for a 1-day shortfall. If the trip is inside 3 weeks, move the flight rather than the vaccination date, because a late booster restarts the whole 21 days.

Do cats need tapeworm treatment for the UK?

Under the current GB rules the 24 to 120 hour tapeworm treatment is a condition for dogs, and cats are not a legal target. Ireland and several carriers still ask for documented worming inside that window, so book it 48 hours before check-in and have the product name, time and stamp written into the passport.
