Six rules decide whether the chemicals under your sink are stored or merely left there. Done properly they cost one afternoon and about 200 RMB: a latched cabinet with its bottom shelf at 150 cm, nothing decanted, nothing on the floor, drain cleaner in a second locked bin, labels and dates kept, and a 3-check routine before you leave the room. Skipped, the same bottles turn a 5 cm puddle of drain gel into a 10-minute emergency, because a cat that steps in it then grooms that paw for 20 minutes.

Rule 1: 150 cm up, and a door that actually latches

A healthy adult cat clears 150 cm from a standing start and 200 cm with 2 strides of run-up, so a shelf at 90 cm is a stepping stone rather than a barrier. Put the chemical cabinet's bottom shelf at 150 cm or higher, and give the door a catch a 4 kg cat leaning on it cannot pop. A magnetic catch rated for 3 kg is decoration, not a lock. Use a child lock with a 2-step release, or a 30 mm padlock through a drilled hasp; either costs 15 to 60 RMB, and the cost tool keeps the whole lockable-bin setup under 200 RMB.

Check 3 things at the door: hinge gap under 5 mm, since a 4 mm gap plus one claw is a lever; a door that swings shut when nudged; no chair or litter box within 60 cm of the handle. Skip glass doors, which a jumping cat does not treat as a barrier.

Rule 2: never decant, never reuse a food container

Almost every serious exposure starts with a bottle that holds the wrong thing. Water bottles, ice-cream tubs and takeaway cups are the 3 worst offenders, because a cat already investigates anything that smells of food. Keep the original container, cap and label even when both are awkward. A container without a label goes to the hazardous-waste point that week.

Decanting also destroys the 2 facts you need at 02:00: concentration and pH. A 20% sodium hydroxide gel and a 10% hydrochloric acid cleaner call for opposite first aid, and a colourless liquid in a spray bottle tells the vet nothing. Photograph every label once.

Rule 3: one locked bin for the caustics

Sort by hazard, not by room. Caustics — drain cleaner, oven cleaner, lye crystals, dishwasher powder — go into their own lidded bin with a latch, because these are the products that burn on contact and keep burning for 10 to 20 minutes after the cat has been picked up. Acids — toilet cleaner, descaler, rust remover — go in a separate bin, never beside the bleach, because a spill that combines the 2 releases gas. Antifreeze goes in a third container inside the latched cabinet: 1.5 mL per kg is the lethal range for ethylene glycol, so 6 mL is enough for a 4 kg cat.

Rule 4: the floor is not storage

Buckets, mop water and the drip tray under the washing machine cause most paw exposures, and none look like storage. A cat needs 5 cm of liquid to wet a paw and 20 minutes of grooming to swallow it. Three checks before leaving the room: bucket emptied, mop rinsed twice, door closed. A bucket left full overnight gets a lid and a weight.

Rule 5: a date on the bottle, 24 months at the outside

Bleach loses about half its strength within 6 to 12 months of opening, which pushes people to pour more, and more is the wrong direction. Write the month of opening on the cap with a marker. Replace opened bleach at 6 months, powders at 24 months, and anything with a faded label immediately. Keep the cabinet between 4 and 30 °C, out of sun: a bottle that sat on a balcony at 40 °C has a swollen cap.

Rule 6: a 3-check exit routine, under 60 seconds

The routine is the part that survives a tired Tuesday. Cap on, latch shut, door pulled once to test the catch. Say it out loud for the first 14 days; that is long enough for it to stop being a decision. Tape the same 3 lines inside the cabinet door in 20 pt type, because the person who needs it at 23:00 will not remember an article. Yarn and craft floss follow the same logic: 4 storage rules for string and floss.

If a bottle spills on the cat: 0, 1, 2, 6 and 24 hours

Assume the cat walked through it. At 0 minutes, carry the cat to a sink and run lukewarm water at 15 to 25 °C over the coated paw or flank for 10 minutes, with 2 people if possible: one holds a towel wrap, one holds the leg. Do not rub, and do not pour vinegar on a caustic splash, because neutralising inside living tissue releases heat. At 1 hour, look for a soapy, grey or whitish patch and for drooling. At 2 hours, a cat still licking one paw has probably swallowed a little, which is a call to the clinic rather than a wait. At 6 hours, vomiting, refusal to eat or a swollen tongue means the cat is seen tonight. At 24 hours, any red, weeping or hairless patch on the paw pads gets a visit, since an alkali burn that looked minor at 1 hour can be full thickness by then.

The 5 steps, in order

  • Buy the latch or the padlock this week: 15 to 60 RMB, one screwdriver, 10 minutes of work.
  • Move the 3 caustic products into one lidded bin, then put the bin inside the latched cabinet.
  • Photograph all 6 labels in one pass, so the 02:00 call has a concentration and a pH to quote.
  • Write opening dates on 4 bottles tonight, and replace any bleach opened before last spring.
  • Run the 3-check exit routine out loud for 14 days, then stop counting.

Frequently asked

How high do I need to store chemicals to keep a cat away?

Put the bottom shelf at 150 cm or more, because an adult cat clears 150 cm from a standing start and 200 cm with 2 steps of run-up. Height alone is not enough: add a latch with a 2-step release, keep the hinge gap under 5 mm, and clear 60 cm around the handle so nothing works as a step.

Is a child lock on the cabinet door actually necessary?

Yes, if the cabinet sits below 150 cm. A magnetic catch rated for 3 kg pops open when a 4 kg cat leans on the door, and a push-to-open door has no catch at all, so a 15 to 60 RMB child lock or a 30 mm padlock through a hasp is the cheapest part of the whole setup. Test it by pulling the closed door once every time you shut it.

What should I do if drain cleaner spills on my cat's paw?

Flush the paw with lukewarm water at 15 to 25 °C for 10 minutes, with no rubbing and no vinegar or lemon juice, since neutralising a caustic releases heat inside tissue that is already burning. Call the clinic the same hour, and have the label ready so you can quote the concentration and the pH.
