Most cats do not need a better bed. They need the same bed in a different place. Three spots per cat, one shelf at 40 cm off the floor, one dark corner at ground level, one warm low bed for the cat over 10 that has stopped jumping. Set all three up, look at each one once a day, and the cat stops sleeping on your keyboard.

Three spots, not one

A cat with a single bed has nowhere to go when the washing machine runs or the room hits 30 °C in July. The workable minimum is 3 spots per cat across 3 different rooms: high, hidden, and warm at floor level. Two cats means 6 spots, and at least 2 of them should not be visible from the same doorway. Put one by the window the cat already watches, one where you sit in the evening, and one in the quietest room in the house.

The 40 cm line

Height does more than padding. A surface at 40 cm clears foot traffic, lifts the cat out of the cold layer that sits in the bottom 20 cm of a room, and still fits under a standard 75 cm windowsill. Below 30 cm most cats read the bed as floor and treat it like a rug. The useful band for a shelf, a wide stool, or the top of a low bookcase is 40 to 60 cm; 60 to 120 cm on a cat tree suits the cat that already jumps onto the kitchen counter.

Access has to match the height. Steps or a stool every 30 cm lets an older cat climb without a single 80 cm leap into space. A cat that pauses 3 seconds at the edge of a jump is telling you that the height has become a barrier, and a ramp at 30 degrees or less, or a bed at 0 cm, fixes it the same day.

The hidden corner

Cats sleep in cover, not in the open. A cardboard box at floor level, 0 to 20 cm, with a 15 to 18 cm opening and one side against a wall, gets used more often than a 60 dollar igloo in the middle of the living room. Leave 30 cm of wall in front of the opening so the cat can approach along cover. In a 2-cat home, pick one with 2 exits, or the cat inside gets cornered.

The warm low bed

Surface temperature picks the third spot. Bedding that sits at 26 to 30 °C wins over bedding at 19 °C every time, which is why cats choose the laptop. A heat pad on its lowest setting, covered by 1 cm of fabric and taking up no more than 50% of the bed floor, gives the cat a warm half and a cool half to shift between.

Keep it 1.5 m from a radiator. Radiator surfaces run 60 to 70 °C, and a cat that cannot move away quickly is a burn case, not a comfort case.

Two things that ruin a good spot

Distance from the litter box comes first. A bed within 1 m of the box goes unused, and a cat that sleeps beside its box is often a cat with joint pain that will not walk 3 m. Keep the box at least 1.5 m away, in another room if the floor plan allows, and the food bowl 1 m from the water bowl.

Movement and noise come second. An air conditioner vent within 2 m, a washing machine within 1 m, a door that swings through the spot, or a speaker at floor level all turn a good bed into a bad one. Cats hear to roughly 64 kHz and feel vibration through the floor, so a spot that is quiet to you can be the loudest 1 square meter in the house.

The 60-second daily check

Once a day, 60 seconds, 3 checks. Flat hand on the bedding: damp means wash it today, not on the weekend. Eyes on the fabric: a ring of hair says the cat is using it, a clean surface after 3 days says the spot is wrong. And a glance at the floor, because a bed shoved 50 cm out of position overnight is the cat reporting a draft or a new noise.

Wash bedding every 7 to 10 days at 60 °C, and replace foam that has flattened under 2 cm, since a compressed pad no longer lifts the ribs off the floor. The washing routine is in how to wash a cat bed.

When the bed is not the problem

A cat that abandons height it used to climb, sleeps on tile instead of the pad, or starts sleeping in the litter box is showing you a body problem, not a furniture problem. Most vets find osteoarthritis on radiographs in cats over 10, and the first sign owners notice is usually a 3 second pause before a jump, 6 to 12 months before any limp. Book the visit and list the 3 spots, their heights, and which one the cat quit. An exam plus 2 radiograph views costs less than 6 months of guessing, and the cost tool puts a number on it before you go.

Set the 3 spots up in 20 minutes

1. Clear a 40 cm shelf under a window and put a 2 cm pad on it. 2. Put a box with one 15 cm opening against a wall in the quietest room. 3. Put a low bed within 1.5 m of a radiator, not on top of it. 4. Move the litter box so no bed sits within 1 m. 5. Note a date 7 days out to see which of the 3 the cat uses, and drop the rest. The routine in a monthly care calendar keeps the 7-day check from slipping.

Frequently asked

How high should a cat bed be in a small flat?

Aim for 40 to 60 cm, which clears foot traffic and still fits under a 75 cm windowsill. In a studio with no shelf space, use the top of a 45 cm bookcase or a wide stool. Anything under 30 cm gets treated as floor, and a cat that wants height will simply pick your desk instead.

My cat ignores every bed I buy. What is wrong?

Usually the location, not the bed. Check 3 numbers: height, distance from the litter box, and draft. A bed under 30 cm, within 1 m of the box, or inside 2 m of an air conditioner vent gets skipped no matter what it cost. Move the same bed 1 to 2 m and give it 3 days before buying another one.

Is a heated bed safe to leave on all day?

On the lowest setting, with 1 cm of fabric over the pad and no more than 50% of the bed floor covered, yes. Keep it 1.5 m from a radiator, since those surfaces reach 60 to 70 °C, and check the pad cord for chewing weekly. A cat that cannot stand up easily should have a pad it can walk off in one step.
