Devon Rex ears need 1 cleaning session a week, using 2 different methods, and 3 abnormalities decide whether that is enough. The breed's pinna is large and low-set with less hair inside than most cats, so wax is visible early and dirt collects where you can see it. A 10-minute weekly session keeps the canal clear; anything that changes color, smell, or head-shaking frequency moves from grooming to a vet question within 24 to 48 hours.
Why weekly, and why not daily
Cat ear canals are L-shaped: a vertical part about 1 cm, then a horizontal part 2 to 3 cm long ending at the eardrum. Wax moves outward on its own, and a normal ear self-cleans in 7 to 14 days. Cleaning more than once a week strips that film and leaves the skin pink and irritated, which is the start of the problem you were trying to prevent. Cleaning less than once every 10 days lets Devon wax, which is darker and stickier than average, build into a 1 to 2 mm layer on the folds. One session per week, 4 to 5 minutes per ear, is the window that matches the breed's wax output.
2 cleaning types, and what each is for
Type 1 is the dry wipe: a gauze square or cotton pad, no liquid, wrapped around the index finger, wiping only the visible folds of the pinna and the first 5 mm of the canal opening. Use 1 pad per ear, 2 passes, and stop at the point where the canal turns. This is the weekly default. Type 2 is the wet flush: 2 to 3 ml of a vet ear cleaner into the canal, the pinna folded over the opening, 3 seconds of massage at the base, then let the cat shake and wipe what comes out. Use it every 2 weeks, or before that if the dry pad comes away brown. Never use water alone, and never use a cleaner that contains alcohol on a cat with broken skin.
3 abnormalities that change the plan
Abnormality 1 is color. Normal Devon wax is light amber to pale brown. Dark brown to black, yellow-green, or gray paste means something else is growing, and a swab at the clinic settles it in 15 minutes. Abnormality 2 is the canal mouth: redness spreading 2 mm or more onto the pinna, swelling that narrows the opening, or a sour smell at 20 cm are all abnormal, and 3 days of home cleaning will not fix them. Abnormality 3 is behavior: head shaking more than 5 times an hour, or 3 or more episodes of pawing 1 ear per night, means pain, not dirt. Any 1 of the 3, present for 2 days, is a vet visit.
Sign, threshold, and how fast to act
The table is the version to stick on the fridge. Counts are things you can actually observe at home; the last 2 columns are the decision.
| What you see | Repeat count | Observe days | Vet within hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light brown wax on the pad | 1 per week | 7 | 0 |
| Dark brown or black discharge | 2 cleanings in a row | 0 | 48 |
| Red canal mouth, sour smell | daily for 2 days | 0 | 24 |
| Head shaking above 5 per hour | 3 hours in 1 day | 0 | 24 |
| Head tilt or loss of balance | 1 episode | 0 | 12 |
| Scratch wound that bleeds | 1 episode | 0 | 12 |
How to hold a Devon for 4 minutes
Wrap the cat in a towel with 1 front paw out, sit on the floor with your back to a wall, and work with the ear facing you. Warm the cleaner bottle in your hand for 30 seconds; cold liquid triggers the shake reflex before you finish. Lift the pinna up and back by 45 degrees to straighten the L, then wipe. If the cat fights at second 60, stop and finish the other ear tomorrow — 2 short sessions beat 1 wrestling match, and 3 bad experiences make the cat hide at the sight of the bottle.
Ear care is skin care in this breed
Devon Rex coat is thin and greasy, and the same sebum that dulls the coat feeds wax in the ear. Bathing every 2 to 3 weeks with a degreasing shampoo reduces ear wax in most Devon households; bathing weekly tends to dry the skin and increase it. Dry the ears with a tissue after every bath, because 1 ml of trapped water in a 3 cm canal is enough to grow bacteria. If you also keep a Selkirk Rex, its ear routine differs — the folded ear traps moisture, so read the Selkirk Rex care calendar separately rather than copying this one. The full monthly schedule, including nail and dental slots, is in the Devon Rex care calendar.
What to never put in the ear
No cotton swabs past the first 5 mm: the canal turns at 1 cm and a swab pushes wax onto the eardrum. No hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, or rubbing alcohol — all 3 damage the thin skin of the canal and hurt more than the wax. No human drops, and no leftover antibiotic or antifungal from another cat, because the drug class has to match the organizm and only a vet can sample it. Ear mite products bought online are a common cause of chemical irritation in this breed, since the pinna is nearly bare and absorbs more. If a vet does prescribe drops, they come by prescription, dosed by weight, for a set number of days — usually 7 to 14.
When it is more than the ear
A head tilt, circling to 1 side, or eyes flicking side to side points to the middle ear or the balance system, and needs a visit within 12 hours, not a cleaning. Facial droop on 1 side, a drooping lip, or an eye that will not blink means the facial nerve is involved. A 1 cm swelling at the base of the ear that is warm to touch is a hematoma forming, and it will refill if drained without treating the cause. In an old cat, a unilateral discharge that does not respond to 7 days of treatment needs an exam of the canal, not another bottle.
4 steps this week
- Sunday: 1 dry pad per ear, 2 passes, stop at the turn, log the color.
- Every second Sunday: 2 to 3 ml of cleaner, 3-second massage, wipe, then dry the folds.
- Daily 10-second check: count head shakes for 1 minute at feeding time; above 5 per hour is a flag.
- Any color change, smell, or 2 days of pawing: book the vet within 24 to 48 hours and stop home cleaning.

Frequently asked
How often should I clean a Devon Rex's ears?
Once a week, 4 to 5 minutes per ear. The canal self-cleans in 7 to 14 days, and cleaning more often strips the protective film and leaves the skin pink. Do a 10-second head-shake count daily so you notice a change before the weekly session.
What is the difference between the dry wipe and the flush?
The dry wipe is a gauze pad on the visible folds and the first 5 mm of the canal, done weekly. The flush is 2 to 3 ml of vet ear cleaner, a 3-second massage at the base, then a shake and a wipe, done every 2 weeks or sooner if the pad comes away brown.
When does an ear problem need a vet?
Within 24 to 48 hours for dark brown or black discharge, a red canal mouth with a sour smell, more than 5 head shakes an hour, or 2 nights of pawing 1 ear. Within 12 hours for a head tilt, loss of balance, or a scratch that bleeds.
