A 21 day plan with three stages and a hard number for each: 5 to 15 cm of door gap, 1.5 m of leash inside one shared room, and two bowls that start 3 m apart and finish 60 cm apart. Most pairs that fail were mixed too early, not too slowly.
This version skips the cloth swapping step. A door held open 5 cm does the same job, carrying odor both ways, while adding a visual cue and a limit the cat can trust.
Set three pass tests before day 1
Judge the next 21 days against three observable tests, not against how a session felt.
- Test 1: the cat eats 4 of 6 meals within 2 m of the gap, days 5 to 7.
- Test 2: the dog lies down within 3 m of a loose cat, 3 sessions in a row, days 11 to 14.
- Test 3: both eat from bowls 60 cm apart for 10 minutes, days 19 to 21.
Write pass or fail on a calendar daily. A 21 day plan only means something if day 9 has a definition.
Days 1 to 4: a 5 cm gap, then 8
Wedge the door at 5 cm. That passes a nose and blocks a 4 kg cat from squeezing through or a 30 kg dog from pushing a muzzle in. Feed both animals 3 times a day, bowls 1.5 m back from the door, 10 minutes per meal.
On day 3, if both ate 5 of 6 meals without leaving the bowl, open to 8 cm. If the cat skipped 2 meals, drop to 2 cm for 24 hours; a 2 cm gap still moves odor.
Move the cat's water and 1 litter tray to within 2 m of the door, so the core area grows toward the gap. Do not carry the cat to the door or lift it to look through.
Days 5 to 7: 15 cm and a screen
Replace the wedge with a mesh screen or a 90 cm gate with a 15 cm cat door cut into one corner. The cat gap is not optional. A barrier the cat cannot leave without turning its back is a trap, and a cornered cat uses claws within 2 seconds.
The dog stays on a 1.5 m leash held by an adult, 2.5 m back. Sessions run 5 minutes, 4 times a day. Feed 10 pea sized pieces of chicken per session, one each time the dog looks at the cat and then breaks eye contact on its own. Do not call the dog away; let it choose, then pay.
By day 7 the cat should walk past at 1 m with a soft tail. If the tail is still puffed, repeat days 5 to 7 instead of opening a room.
Days 8 to 14: one room, 1.5 m of leash
Two adults. The dog is on a 1.5 m leash 3 m from the cat's resting spot, paid 1 piece of food every 5 seconds for the first 2 minutes. The cat is loose with 3 ways off the floor. Sessions run 8 minutes twice a day, reaching 12 minutes by day 12.
Two adults is not caution theater. One holds the leash, the other reads the cat and opens the door if it stalls. One person cannot do both, and the failure mode is a lunge the cat remembers for months.
Pass test: the dog lies down within 3 m in 3 sessions in a row, the cat's tail is vertical and soft, and the cat returns to the room alone. If the dog stands, stares and whines at 3 m, add 1 m and cut to 5 minutes.
Days 15 to 21: from 3 m to 60 cm at the bowl
Parallel feeding is the stage people rush. Bowls go 3 m apart on day 15, and you close 50 cm only after 2 calm meals in a row: 3 m, 2.5 m, 2 m, 1.5 m, 1 m, 80 cm, 60 cm on day 21.
Meals last 10 minutes and both bowls go down and up together. If the dog leaves its bowl to check the cat's, remove both, reset 1 m and repeat 2 meals. Bowl guarding is normal dog behavior, managed with distance and 2 bowls, not scolding.
At 60 cm you are not finished. Keep the mats 60 to 100 cm apart for the first month, feed at the same hour daily, and never place a bowl between the two animals.
The 21 day stage table
| Day | Stage | Gap or distance | Session | Pass test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Odor only | 5 cm gap, 1.5 m back | 10 min, 3 per day | 4 of 6 meals eaten |
| 3 to 4 | Wider gap | 8 cm gap, 1.5 m back | 10 min, 3 per day | 5 of 6, no leaving |
| 5 to 7 | Seeing | 15 cm cat gap, dog 2.5 m | 5 min, 4 per day | Cat passes at 1 m |
| 8 to 10 | One room | Leash 1.5 m, dog 3 m | 8 min, 2 per day | No stare, no whine |
| 11 to 14 | Closer | Dog 2 m, cat loose | 12 min, 2 per day | 3 calm sessions |
| 15 to 18 | Feeding | Bowls 3 m to 1.5 m | 10 min, 2 per day | 2 calm meals per step |
| 19 to 21 | Shared meal | Bowls 1 m to 60 cm | 10 min, 2 per day | Both finish, no guard |
Not quite 1 pair in 3 clears this table without repeating a row. Repeating row 3 for 2 days costs 48 hours; forcing row 4 costs 6 months of gates.
When to hold and when to step back
- 1 hiss, cat stays: hold at the same day, repeat 24 hours.
- Cat hides over 2 hours after a session or skips 1 meal: back 1 stage, 48 hours.
- Dog lunges 2 times in 3 sessions: back 1 stage, add 1 m, hold 72 hours.
- Any contact, paw or muzzle: back 2 stages, 7 days, no shared room.
- Broken skin, 24 hours without eating, or 2 days of litter box avoidance: vet within 24 hours, then restart at day 1 after 14 days.
- Cat loses over 5 percent of body weight in 3 weeks: stop and get bloodwork.
Regression is data. The pairs that finish fastest are usually the ones that repeated days 5 to 7 twice, because the screen stage is where the cat decides the floor is safe.
What has to be in the house before day 1
2 barriers, 1 wedge, 1 leash of 1.5 m, 2 adults for 20 minutes daily, 7 days of wet food each, 1 tray within 2 m of the door, 3 escape routes in the meeting room, and 1 room the dog cannot enter. The gear costs less than 1 behavior consultation; a bad first month costs 10 years of gates.
Do this in order
- Write the 3 pass tests and the 5 regression rules on day 0.
- Wedge the door at 5 cm, feed 3 times daily at 1.5 m for 4 days.
- Fit a screen with a 15 cm cat gap, run 5 minute sessions, 4 daily, for 3 days.
- Open one room with the dog on a 1.5 m leash and 2 adults, 8 to 12 minutes daily.
- Walk the bowls from 3 m to 60 cm, then hold 60 cm for a month.
If your dog is a herding breed or a sighthound, read the longer 2 to 6 week version and run the breed quiz before the first shared room session.
Frequently asked
Do I repeat a stage even if the session looked calm to me?
Yes, if the pass test failed. The test is behavioral, not emotional: 4 of 6 meals eaten near the gap, a dog that lies down within 3 m three sessions in a row, two bowls emptied at 60 cm. A session that felt fine but ended with a puffed tail did not pass, and repeating 48 hours is cheaper than restarting after a lunge.
Can I skip the 15 cm cat gap if my cat is confident?
No. The gap is not about confidence, it is about exits. A barrier the cat cannot pass without turning its back turns the screen into a trap, and a cornered cat uses claws within 2 seconds, which ends the plan for weeks. Cut the gap in one corner of the gate so the cat can leave without exposing its back.
What changes if the dog is a puppy under 6 months?
You can compress the first two stages by about 2 days each, because a puppy has less rehearsed chasing to undo, but you cannot skip them. Keep every session under 5 minutes, keep the 1.5 m leash on indoors for the first month, and expect the puppy to test the cat again at 8 to 10 months during adolescence.
