A blind cat maps a room the way you map a dark kitchen: by memory, by smell, and by the feel of the floor under each paw. Give it 2 to 3 weeks with the furniture in exactly the same place and most cats cross the apartment at a normal walk without a single bump. Move one chair on day 3 and the clock restarts.
Three things do the work: a scent path, a sound cue, and 15 cm of clear floor along every wall. The gear costs 40 USD or less, and none of it changes how often an older blind cat needs bloodwork.
Why the map takes 2 to 3 weeks
A cat builds the map from whiskers, paw pads, and remembered distances, not from sight. Whisker span runs about 1.5 times body width, so a 4 kg cat reads an 8 to 10 cm gap as walkable and a 6 cm gap as blocked. Rehearsal fixes it: 3 passes of the same corridor a day for 14 days builds a route a cat will run by week 3.
Most newly blind cats settle in 14 to 21 days. Add 4 to 8 weeks when the blindness came on suddenly, which follows 2 common causes: retinal detachment from blood pressure above 180 mmHg, and glaucoma with eye pressure above 25 mmHg.
The map is finished when the cat crosses the living room at a walk, uses 2 known jumping points, and stops at the bowl without pawing air. Pawing 3 or more walls per crossing means the room stays frozen another 7 days.
Freeze the furniture: 0 moves for 21 days
Zero moves for the first 21 days, then 1 change at a time, with the cat shut in another room for the 5 minutes the move takes. A shifted sofa costs 2 to 4 days of relearning. A shifted litter box costs more, because many cats answer by holding urine for 12 to 24 hours, a cystitis risk in any cat and a blockage risk in a male.
Clear the walking lanes as strictly as the furniture. Shoes, bags, and delivery boxes dropped in the 15 cm wall strip cause most setbacks, and a 20 cm bag is a solid wall to a cat with no eyes. Keep 2 doors shut: the front door and the balcony door. A blind cat cannot see a 1 m drop, and falls happen in month 1, not month 5.
Scent paths: 4 anchor stations
Four stations carry the map: food, water, litter, and your bed. They never move, not by 10 cm. A cat finds the bowl by scent at 1 to 2 m and by memory inside that radius, which is why sliding a bowl 30 cm to fit a mat can produce 3 nights of 5 a.m. meowing.
Do not rotate litter brands or scented litter for the first 8 weeks. A blind cat locates the box by scent, and a new scent reads as a box moved 2 m away. Skip essential-oil diffusers: tea tree, eucalyptus, and citrus are toxic to cats, and a blind cat walks nose-first into whatever hangs in the air.
Sound cues that work in 2 seconds
Use 1 name and 1 sound, and never mix them. Clap twice from 1 to 2 m away before you touch, then say the name and wait 2 seconds. The pause is the cue. A hand that lands during the pause is a hand the cat never heard, and a startle at 1 m turns into a swipe.
Tap the bowl rim 3 times before setting food down, and tap the litter box edge twice before cleaning it. Each gesture takes 2 seconds and cuts the 4 a.m. yowling owners report in week 1. Keep background noise steady: a TV at 60 to 65 dB covers the fridge and the doorbell, while a silent house turns a 40 dB creak into a surprise. Approach from the front or side, never from above, because a hand descending from 60 cm registers as a predator.
The 15 cm buffer rule
Keep 15 cm of clear floor along every wall and every piece of furniture. Anything protruding more than 15 cm at nose height, roughly 20 cm off the floor, is a collision point. Chair legs are the usual offender: 4 legs per chair, 6 chairs at a table, 24 obstacles in a 3 m by 4 m room. Push the chairs in after every meal or swap them for 1 bench.
Two more buffers: 1 m of clear floor in front of the stove, and gates at the top and bottom of every staircase, so 2 gates per flight. Corner guards on a glass coffee table cost 8 to 12 USD and remove the injury that sends blind cats to the clinic most often: a corneal scratch from a table corner at eye height.
3 games a blind cat can win
Play is how the map gets rehearsed, and 3 games work without sight. First, a ball with a bell inside, rolled 1 to 2 m along the floor. Second, a wand dragged on the floor in a 1 m arc and never lifted, because a toy in the air makes no sound to follow. Third, a scent hunt: 3 paper cups upside down, a treat under 1, and the cat knocks them over. Ten minutes twice a day is enough.

When to call the vet
Blindness itself is not painful, but its cause can be. In cats over 8, sudden blindness is high blood pressure until proven otherwise, so book a pressure check plus a thyroid and kidney panel the same week. Call within 24 hours for red, cloudy, or leaking eyes; 24 hours without food; yowling at night on 2 or more nights; head pressing against a wall; or bumping that gets worse after week 3.
A blind cat with a second condition needs a different budget. Read /adopt/adopting-senior-cat-kidney-disease/ before the first appointment if the cat is over 10, and the FIV rules at /adopt/adopting-a-cat-with-fiv/ if it came from a colony. The 40 USD of gear above is small next to the yearly figures in /tools/cost/.
First 7 days, in order
- Day 1: 1 room, 3 stations placed, door shut, litter lip at 5 cm.
- Day 2 to 3: carry the cat to each station 3 times a day and let it walk back.
- Day 4: open 1 more room with the same furniture and a clear 15 cm strip.
- Day 5 to 6: 2 play sessions of 10 minutes, bell ball first, floor wand second.
- Day 7: 1 clean walk across the room means continue; 3 bumps means another 7 days in 1 room.
Frequently asked
Should I move my blind cat's furniture at all?
Not for the first 21 days, and then only 1 item per week with the cat in another room. Each move costs 2 to 4 days of relearning, and a moved litter box is worse than a moved chair: cats often respond by holding urine for 12 to 24 hours, which risks cystitis and, in a male, a blockage.
How do I let a blind cat know I am about to touch it?
Clap twice from 1 to 2 m away, say its name once, then wait 2 full seconds before your hand makes contact. Approach from the front or the side, never from above 60 cm. The pause is what makes the cue work; without it the touch reads as a grab.
Does a blind cat need a companion cat?
Not usually. A calm second cat can act as a sound anchor, but a playful 1 year old that ambushes will make a blind cat stop moving through the house. If you add one, choose an adult over 5 with a quiet play style, add 1 extra litter box, and expect 2 to 3 weeks of supervised introductions.
