Three numbers decide whether a window is safe: a screen that holds 5 kg of static load, a gap nowhere wider than 4 cm, and a hard rule that nothing opens above the 3rd floor without a screen rated for a falling cat. Most home checks fail the second one, because a 6 cm gap looks small to a person and is a full body width to a 4 kg cat.
Fix this before the cat arrives, not after the first escape attempt. A cat that has been out once will try the same window again within 72 hours, and the second attempt is usually faster.
The 3 numbers, and where they come from
5 kg is the static load a screen must carry without deforming, because an adult cat runs 3.5-5.5 kg and arrives at the mesh with momentum, not weight. A screen rated at 5 kg handled gently is not the same as a screen hit at 2 m per second by 5.5 kg.
4 cm is the gap limit: a cat's head passes where its shoulders do, and shoulders on a 4 kg cat are roughly 7-8 cm across, so a 4 cm gap stops the head before the body commits. 3 floors is the threshold where a fall stops being a scare: from the 3rd floor and above, hard-palate fractures, pneumothorax and limb fractures are the common injuries rather than the rare ones.
Why indoor cats go out
Three specific triggers do most of it: a bird or an insect within 30-50 cm of the mesh, another cat visible on a neighbouring balcony, and a door or window left open for 2-3 minutes during cleaning or delivery.
Cats also push screens with a shoulder roll, not a leap: 1.5 kg of steady pressure at the bottom rail pops a friction-fit screen out of its track in seconds. That is why the bottom fixings matter more than the top ones, and why a screen that rattles when you press it with one finger is already a failure.
Measure before you buy
Open the window, hold a 4 cm wooden block against every edge, and try to slide it through. Check 5 points per window: both vertical sides, the top rail, the bottom rail, and the meeting point of a sliding pair. Then check the window's own opening: a 10 cm stopper limits the gap on a casement or slider even when the screen fails.
Write the measurements down as width by height in cm, add 2 cm per side for the frame, and count the windows the cat can actually reach. A cat reaches any sill within 1.8 m of a sofa, a shelf or a cat tree, which in a 60 sq m flat is usually 3-5 windows, not 1.
Three builds, priced and compared
All three work; the difference is load, gap, and whether you can drill. Costs are per window in RMB.
| Build | Cost (RMB) | Static load | Leftover gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0. Stock insect screen, unchanged | 0-80 | 1-2 kg | 3-6 cm |
| 1. Aluminum frame, 2.5 mm 304 mesh, 8 screws | 300-900 | 8-15 kg | 0-2 cm |
| 2. Tension-fit frame with 4 brackets, no drilling | 150-400 | 4-6 kg | 1-3 cm |
| 3. Balcony netting, 3 cm mesh, top frame angled in | 500-1,500 | 10-20 kg | 0-3 cm |
Build 1 is the only one to use above the 3rd floor when the window is the cat's main view, because 8-15 kg leaves a margin over a 5.5 kg cat. Build 2 suits renters and low floors, and passes if the gap is under 3 cm and the brackets are tightened every 90 days. Build 3 is for balconies, where the risk is a 110 cm railing the cat can walk on, not a window opening.
Balcony detail: height, angle, spacing
Net the full opening from floor to 150-180 cm, not just the railing. The top edge should lean inward at 30-45 degrees over a 30-40 cm overhang, because a cat that climbs the mesh meets an inward slope and drops back rather than going over.
Fix the net every 30 cm with UV-rated cable ties, and replace ties every 12-18 months: ordinary nylon ties fail in sunlight within 1-2 summers, silently. Check the tension by pressing the middle of each panel with a flat hand; it should not touch the railing.
Doors and the 2 cm rule
Screens fail at doors more often than at windows. Fit a sliding door with a lock that holds at 2 cm of opening, and put a second latch on any screen door at 60 cm and 120 cm above the floor. Check the bottom sweep: a 2 cm gap under a screen door is enough for a determined kitten under 6 months.
For balcony doors, the 10 cm stopper plus the net is the pair that works; a stopper alone still lets a cat get a shoulder through and hang.
If a cat does fall
Assume injury even if the cat walks. Go to a vet within 1-2 hours for a chest listen and, where indicated, radiographs at 300-600 RMB. The dangerous window is 12-48 hours, because pneumothorax and internal bleeding can develop after a cat that looked fine at hour 1.
Three signs mean go now, not tomorrow: open-mouth breathing, a resting respiratory rate over 40 per minute, and no urination for 12 hours. Add a fourth if there is blood at the nose or the cat cannot bear weight on a front leg. Do not let the cat hide under a bed for the night as a way of avoiding the trip.
Renters, deposits and removal
Tension-fit builds need no holes, come out in 20-30 minutes, and usually cost a 200-500 RMB deposit deduction at most for paint scuffs. Ask the landlord in writing before installing anything that drills, and photograph the frame before removal; 8 screw holes are 30 minutes of filler and a 50-150 RMB repair.
If the lease forbids all fixing, the fallback is a 10 cm stopper on every opening window plus a locked balcony door, which is weaker but better than nothing, and worth 100-200 RMB. Our notes on balcony and window safety cover the door and screen variants in more detail.
Cost of doing it once
For a 60 sq m flat with 4 reachable windows: 4 frames at 300-900 each is 1,200-3,600, plus 500-1,500 for a balcony net, plus 100-200 for stoppers. Total 1,800-5,300 RMB, one time, against an emergency visit at 800-3,000 and a fracture repair at 3,000-9,000. Our cost tool carries the same bands if you want the 5-year view.
Five steps this week
- Count reachable windows and measure each one, including the gap at the bottom rail.
- Prioritise the window the cat sits at for more than 30 minutes a day.
- Install build 1 on floors 3 and above; build 2 is acceptable only below that line.
- Replace every cable tie at the 12-month mark, and put the date on the frame in marker.
- After any escape or fall, vet within 2 hours and re-check every fixing on that wall.

Frequently asked
Is a normal insect screen enough for a cat?
No. Standard fiberglass mesh is rated for insects and deforms at 1-2 kg of pressure, well under the 5 kg static load a 3.5-5.5 kg cat delivers. It also leaves a 3-6 cm gap at the bottom rail, which is wide enough for a cat to push a shoulder through.
Can I protect windows without drilling?
Yes, with a tension-fit frame and 4 brackets at 150-400 RMB per window, which holds 4-6 kg and leaves a 1-3 cm gap. It is acceptable below the 3rd floor if you tighten the brackets every 90 days, and it comes out in 20-30 minutes when you move.
What should I do if my cat falls from a window?
Go to a vet within 1-2 hours even if the cat walks normally, because pneumothorax and internal bleeding can appear 12-48 hours later. Watch for open-mouth breathing, a resting respiratory rate over 40 per minute, and no urination for 12 hours, and do not let the cat hide instead of travelling.
