An 11-year-old cat is often the best-value adoption in the building: litter-trained, calm under handling, and usually still good for 3-5 more years. The obstacle is arithmetic. Cats over 11 are adopted at roughly 40% below the rate for kittens under 6 months, so most placements are lost before the first visit to a landlord, a stairwell, or a household that cannot do twice-daily pills.

Run the 6-item test below before you book a meeting. Five passes out of 6 means adopt with a plan. Four or fewer means foster for 28 days first (see our foster-to-adopt guide), then re-run the test in week 4.

Where the 11-year line comes from

Clinics split older cats into senior (11-14 years) and geriatric (15 and up). An indoor cat that reaches 11 usually lives to 14-17, which is where the 3-5 year figure comes from: at 11 you are buying a third of a lifespan, not a hospice shift.

What changes at 11 is reserve, not personality. Kidney mass, thyroid output, blood pressure and joint cartilage all drift, and a cat hides the loss until roughly 70% of kidney function is gone. That single number explains why the first 12 months carry more risk than the next 36: stage 2 chronic kidney disease (CKD) is managed for years, stage 4 is managed for weeks.

The 40% gap, in numbers

A kitten under 6 months leaves a shelter in 2-4 weeks. A cat over 11 sits for 3-6 months, and the gap holds even when the senior is healthier than the kitten on every lab value. A 40% lower adoption rate compounds: fewer visitors ask to meet the cat, the cat is handled less, it greets strangers worse, and fewer visitors ask again.

Two moves break the loop. Ask for the meeting in a quiet room rather than a 3 m corridor, and take the cat home on a 7-14 day trial where the contract allows it. A cat that flattens in a corridor is often a different animal in a 12 sq m room after 48 hours.

The 6-item fit test

Every item has a pass line you can measure in one afternoon, and 4 of the 6 are pure arithmetic. Score first, visit second.

ItemPass lineHow to measure it today
1. Stairs and litter access1 box per floor the cat uses; within 3 m of the sleeping spot; entry side 10 cm or lessCount flights: 0 flights over age 13; 1 flight only with a box at both ends
2. Body weight3.5-5.5 kg stable; monthly weigh-in2% loss in 30 days or 5% in 90 days = vet within 7 days
3. Medication load2 doses a day maximum, 2 pilling attempts per dose7-day dry run: 90% of doses given without a second person
4. Vet distance20 minutes by car; 24-hour ER within 45 minutesTime the drive twice, at 8 a.m. and at 11 p.m.
5. Annual budget1,200-3,000 RMB routine; 4,000-9,000 RMB with CKD or thyroid diseaseAdd 800-1,500 RMB for the first 90 days
6. Daily time20-30 minutes of company; 10 minutes grooming 3 times a weekLog 7 real days before you sign, not 7 imagined ones

Items 2 and 3 are where placements break. Senior cats lose muscle before they lose appetite, so a 4.2 kg cat that weighed 4.5 kg in June needs a vet visit, not a diet. And a cat on 2 doses a day for hyperthyroidism needs 730 doses a year: a household that cannot hit 90% compliance should not sign the contract, however much it likes the cat.

Money: three ranges, not one

The adoption fee (0-500 RMB) is the smallest line. Routine senior care runs 1,200-3,000 RMB a year: annual exam with bloodwork 400-900, dental cleaning under anesthesia 800-2,500, food 150-400 a month.

If the cat arrives with CKD stage 2 or hyperthyroidism, plan 4,000-9,000 RMB a year. A renal diet costs 300-600 a month, bloodwork every 3-4 months costs 400-700, blood pressure checks 100-200 each, and methimazole or a one-off radioiodine course runs 3,000-6,000. The first 90 days cost 1,500-4,500 regardless, because you will repeat the fecal test and probably treat teeth.

Insurance changes the arithmetic only if it is bought before the first vet visit, since most policies exclude anything that first exam documents; senior premiums run 1,500-3,000 RMB a year. Our cost calculator carries the same ranges if you want to model 3 years rather than 1.

The 4 numbers to track monthly

Weigh the cat on a baby scale on the same date each month. Then log water intake (40-60 ml per kg per day is the usual band), urine clumps per day, and resting respiratory rate while the cat is asleep (20-30 breaths a minute; 40 or more is an emergency call).

Write all 4 on the food bin in marker. A 2% weight loss in 30 days, a jump from 3 clumps to 7, or a rate that sits at 36 for 3 days means a vet appointment within 7 days, not at the next annual.

Two visits and a 48-hour trial

Ask for 2 visits on different days and at different hours: one at opening, one 30 minutes before closing. The same cat can read as affectionate at 9 a.m. and defensive at 5 p.m. Before signing, walk the 7 checks in our adoption checklist against the cat's own paperwork: vaccine dates, dental history, bloodwork from the last 6 months, and any note that reads difficult to handle.

When to walk away

Three situations justify a no. First, CKD or hyperthyroidism with no bloodwork in the last 6 months and no recheck date on the record. Second, a cat urinating outside the box 3 or more times a week with no veterinary workup. Third, a flat where the only box is 2 floors up and the cat is 13 with visible stiffness in the hind legs.

Your first 30 days

  1. Days 0-3: one room, 2 litter boxes, food and water 1.5 m apart, no visitors.
  2. Day 3: weigh the cat, then book the 72-hour vet visit with 2 fecal samples.
  3. Day 7: start the 4-number log on the food bin.
  4. Day 14: open the rest of the flat and add a step or ramp to the highest sleeping spot.
  5. Day 30: re-run the 6-item test and reset the budget before month 2.

Frequently asked

Is 11 too old to adopt a cat?

No, and 11 is where the value is. An indoor cat reaching 11 usually lives to 14-17, so you are buying 3-5 years of a settled animal rather than 12 months of a sick one. The real test is medical load: if the cat needs 2 doses a day and nobody at home can hit 90% compliance, the age is not the problem.

How much does a senior cat cost per year?

Routine care runs 1,200-3,000 RMB a year, covering a 400-900 RMB exam with bloodwork, dental cleaning at 800-2,500 and food at 150-400 a month. With CKD stage 2 or hyperthyroidism the realistic band is 4,000-9,000 RMB, plus 1,500-4,500 in the first 90 days for repeat fecal tests and dental work.

What if the senior cat hides when we visit?

Hiding in a shelter corridor predicts very little. Ask for a quiet room, sit on the floor for 10 minutes without reaching, and watch whether the cat blinks, turns its ears toward you or takes food at 30 cm. Then use a 7-14 day trial, because most shut-down cats show a different baseline after 48 hours in a 12 sq m room.
